I had open RNY in Dec 2000, developed a marginal ulcer that perforated,
caused peritonitis, and had a complete staple line disruption at 4 months
post op.. I had an emergency revision surgery in April 2001 to correct the
staple line disruption by transecting the stomach, and the ulcer by
resecting it.. I continued to have problems with nausea/ vomiting and
occasional pain.. was diagnosed in early Nov with an atonic pouch...
meaning that the pouch was enlarged and couldnt move food through properly.
I became very ill, and had to be revised again in Feb 2002. This last
surgery was , however, very successful, and performed by different surgeon
than my first and second surgeries. I elected to go to a different state
and surgeon, and am so thankful that I did.. I truly believed that I was
going to die as I had become so very ill... and death would have been
welcomed at that point. However, I am living proof that you can have
serious complications, and overcome them, and go on to lead a fairly active
and normal life I would do the surgery all over again, but would make sure
that the surgeon I chose was qualified to give me the surgery and success
rate that I want. I am almost 18 months post op from my first surgery and
have lost over 180 pounds.. Yes, life can be good when you have a good
surgeon, good aftercare and great support all in place.
Take care..
