Question:
I Know Everybody Asks This Question....

Today, I went to Taco Bell and had an order of seven-layers nachos. This is nachos with cheese, sour cream, chopped tomatos, shredded lettuce, guacomole, taco meat (hamburger) and sauce. I ate almost all of it. I am five weeks post op and supposed to be on pureed foods. I can have (baked) nachos, not fried. I really don't feel that guilty, because I am usually 95% following doctors orders, but I don't think I should be able to eat that much. I didn't even feel full afterwards. I never feel full. I don't feel hungry either though. Is this normal?    — Lisa N M. (posted on April 26, 2002)

I am 9 weeks post and just had the seven layer nachos. I ate just over half. I think I could have eaten more but I was feeling guilty about the calories. I know I can eat larger quantities of smushy foods like beans, sour cream & melted cheese. My average meal is 1/2 cup.

You didn't say how long it took you to eat. If you ate for like 30+ minutes, you can "fix" this tomorrow. Just don't eat past 15-20 min. I am a volume eater, too. Would prefer to eat once every 24 hours and just be done with it, but be serious about it. The many small meals was an effort for me, but every time I made it through a day with the 5-6 teensy meals, I could go to bed with NO GUILT. And shoot, that weight MUCH more than the 150# I lost.

Oh my gosh, those 7 layer nachos are so good! I am almost 5 months postop and bought an order the other day for lunch. I was able to eat the whole thing and that upset me a bit. I was somewhat uncomfortably full for awhile afterwords. I know it wasn't the healthiest choice and I won't do it again for a long time, but I had craved them for days and finally decided to indulge. I needed something quick while I was out and couldn't stand the thought of another Wendy's chili or Taco Bell refried beans.

Lisa, Try an experiment to see if you do get full. Start eating cottage cheese (measure the amount first) and keep eating it until you do get full. This will let you know the size of your new tummy. If you can eat alot, then perhaps you have a staple disruption that is allowing food to get into your old stomach. Check it out and talk to your nutritionist. I noticed you were a patient of Dr.Roll. they have two very good nutritionists there.

Lisa, I'm 5 months post op and can't get anywhere near half of those. But everyone is different, I've turned out to be a "smaller" eater than most of the post-ops I know. But, if you're supposed to be on pureed foods I would go back to them. You're supposed to use your stages to learn to feel full as you progress to the harder foods (I learned the hard way)... I wouldn't feel guilty for eating it but keep an eye on things :) It's all too easy to fall back into the pre-op eating habbits... Good luck in your journey! :)

I can eat HALF of it "comfortably". 3/4 of it and I'm so full I may have to get sick. I sure don't know how anybody can eat the whole thing after WLS. But then again we are all different.
