Question:
What was the name of the show that was about WLS?
When will it be on again? I went to their website and searched for it, but wasn't able to find it. Anytime that there is a show on about WLS, I do everything I can to see it, but it seems like I never hear about them until afterwards. I wish there was a way that we could notify each other a day or so ahead of time about a show that will be on. That way, time zones wouldn't be an issue. There was only one time I noticed someone posted that MTV's True Life would be on and I really appreciated that. — Kelly M. (posted on March 24, 2002)

Hi Kelly,
I am the poster who asked about the Discovery Chanel Show yesterday...I was
chanel surfing when I found it, so I caught it maybe 15-30 minutes
in...anyway, my impression was that the show was a year or so old, because
it made reference to the "brand new, recently approved by the
FDA" lap-band procedure, and this actually occurred last year. I wish
I knew how to find AMOS members by name (if we can?) because I would look
for David Smith and Cindy Levey...I admire their generosity. It's one
thing to go through this journey under the relative confines of our family
and friends, quite another to do it so publically and openly. Anyway,
they showed the operations, David's last meal (which, ironically, took
place at the Mangianos that I go to every month when I am in Atlanta on
business!), and the follow up - at four weeks, she had lost 30lbs. and was
getting a lap-band "fill" and at 6 months he had lost 150 lbs.,
which was 1/2 of what he wanted to lose. It was a good show...it probably
didn't tell us anything we didn't already know (mainly that WLS is the only
proven medical treatment for morbid obesity right now) but it was worth
watching...good luck finding it!

I've seen two others about WLS in the last month so hope I've got the right
title. "Heavy Weights"

I posted this earlier today, but it got deleted because I included a
hyperlink -- apparently a no-no on AMOS. I'm still learning the rules.

Anyway, here it is again:
I went to the Discovery web site and couldn't find it either, but when I
searched TV Guide using the keyword "obesity", I found several
WLS-related shows that are scheduled to air in the next week. I think this
is the one that the previous poster had seen:

Heavyweight Solutions 60 min.
Profiling two people who have weight-loss surgery for life-threatening
obesity. Also: a weight-control program for children in Texas; comparing
European and American lifestyles and other factors contributing to
obesity.
Wednesday, 27 3:00 AM (Eastern) Discovery Health Channel

There is also a show called "Obesity: A Deadly Risk" hosted by
Carnie Wilson (12pm EST on Saturday March 30th) and one called "Mark's
Story: Struggling with Obesity" (2pm and 5pm EST on Wednesday April
3rd) about a man in Australia who is having gastric bypass
surgery.

Discovery Health must find this topic as interesting as we do! Hope this
helps!

Just wanted to mention to everyone -- I was flipping channels, and it looks
like there's a 20/20 show about WLS surgery on TV tonight on ABC.

I just watched the 20/20 show. An entire family in New Jersey as well as
several of their friends had RNY surgery. It was a quick segment, but very
inspiring. It mentioned the risk, but emphasized the benefits, and it
provided what seemed like reasonably accurate information about the
procedure and post-op life. I taped it and am planning to show it to my
parents. I haven't told them about my surgery plans yet, and I'm
anticipating they'll be be somewhat concerned/anxious/skeptical. I think
watching a whole family be transformed by RNY will help
them to understand why I'm doing this.

I was able to watch the 20/20 show tonight with my 16 year old son. I was
relieved that it was not an "anti-WLS" show! My son was so
concerned a few weeks ago when I told him I am going to have the surgery
(pending approval). Now he is willing to support me and even had me come to
AMOS to calculate his BMI. He needs to lose about 50 pounds and I hope he
can do it through increased activity and better food choices...something I
hope I'll be able to help him out with as I go through my post-op journey!
