Question:
With RNY surgery why will some doctors transect and some won't ?

I would like a transection because my husbands insurance changes from year to year and am afraid a revision would not be appproved for a staple line breakdown since it's not life threatening. Therefore,I prefer to have the transection done. Dawn    — Dawn M. (posted on March 8, 2002)

From what I understand, transecting the stomach runs the risk of more complications. I had a Lap RNY and they have to transect the stomach when doing the Lap procedure. The incisions are so small during the Lap, that the stapler won't fit inside so they use another instrument to transect. I am 7 months post-op and have had no problems (crossing fingers).

My doctor doesn't transect and now I am wondering if I have a staple line disruption. I can eat ALOT and not feel totally stuffed like in the beginning. I also have not lost any weight in a while. I am ranging between 153-154. I will have to see what tests are performed to check for this. I will be so mad if I have to have another surgery to fix this. The open RNY is the most painful surgery I have ever had. If you have a choice, get transected. Good luck.

Dawn, My doctor only does transected. He said he puts in 4 rows of staples in the pouch area and sews the large section of the tummy. Places a section of fat between the two. As our bodies heal skin grows over the staple lines. If it is not transected it has a posibiblity of growing back togeather. Also he said when you have sergery have the doctor place a band around the pouch area. The reason for that is to keep the stomach from streaching to much. Over years your pouch will stretch sightly but patients without the band has a larger chance of really stretching out the pouch and will need a revision and will probibly regain their weight back.(not all , but a large portion) .He also places a feeding tube in large tummy to get the required nutreients while healing. In for 5-6 weeks. Also helps on hair loss. I hope this helps. I would hate to think of having this surgery and having to redo it 10 years. Also he said he takes the gall bladder out. Most will have to have second operation if this is not done . Good luck. sandy

Transecting takes more skill that a staple line. Newer surgeons usually haven't those skills yet. You deserve the best, if he doesn't transect, run run run.
