Question:
What happens to the part of the stomach and intestine that isnt being used anymore?
i am curious about the large portiion of stomach and the section of intestine that are no longer being used. Will they stay healthy tissue or shrivle up an die. Is this healthy? — Sandy B. (posted on March 5, 2002)

In an RNY there is no 'unused' portion of intestine. The first part, the
duodenum, is bypassed, so that food is not going directly into it from your
pouch. However, it is still attached to the rest of your stomach and
carries other digestive juices from your stomach into your intestines where
they are re-joined. Go to the gallery, or map, I'm not sure which and you
can find a drawing of what is done.
