Question:
150 lbs in 6 months?
Hi, I am curious as to how many of you starting at around 300lbs, and a BMI of 49 or so have lost 150 lbs in 6 months? Is this possible? The reason I ask is because an online friend and I had surgery the same day, she weighed 280 and I 340. We both have stayed to our exact Dr's orders, (same doctor) and she claims to have lost 150 in the past six months. I haven't seen her, but am shocked!. I've lost 115. I have tried to ask her what exactly she has done to lose so rapidly, having less to lose then I, and she is evasive in her answers. I know this sounds like I'm competing with her, but I just can't get it out of my mind. What do you think? Is this possible?? — [Anonymous] (posted on February 14, 2002)

I guess anything is possible but I dont blame you for being skeptical I
would be too. One thing for sure is if she has lost that much and is down
to 130 she would have pics you could always ask her to see them.....Just a
thought.Congrats on your loss girl sounds like you are ON top of it.

I don't think it's impossible. I started at 310 (BMI 54), and have lost 108
lbs at 2 days shy of 5 months (BMI now 34). I have been far from perfect
with both diet and exercise, but obviously, I have also done pretty well. I
estimate that I will be down 125 at 6 months based on my trends. I am VERY
pleased with that. :-)

You can look at my photos and journals online. I don't hide much
of anything. I would have a look at this friend... if she is 130 lbs, that
would be pretty obvious, don't you think? It's not worth it to compete. I
would ask her what she is doing to do so well, you want some pointers.

Good luck. It's not a race. Your loss of 115 is right on track
with what I've seen a lot of other people do. I am pretty sure my loss will
be higher, but I also exercise 1-2 hrs a day, which it seems is pretty
unusual among the WLS crowd.
Finally, what surgery did she have?
Perhaps she has a much more distal RNY than you do; that can make a big
difference, especially early on.

Everyone loses differently. It is very possible that she lost 150 pounds
in 6 months. I lost 107 at my 7 week check up. Until I got my before and
after pics up people didn't believe that I lost 280 pounds in one year
either. I am always thrilled for anyone losing weight because I see them
as one step closer to good health, but jealousy seems to cloud some people
eyes.

Hi, I started at exactly 280 pounds and at 6 months postop (the month I got
married so I remember) I was exactly 140. That's 130 pounds in 6 months so
yes, it's certainly possible and sounds like this woman is even shorter
than I am by her BMI. Please re-evaluate how you are thinking about this
though because it's NOT a contest, like you said, and you are doing
beautifully. May I give you one thing to look forward to though? If you
lose slower, it's possible that you are giving your skin alittle more time
to bounce back and "maybe", in the end, you will like what you
see alittle more than she does having lost so fast. Good luck.

I think people lose at different rates. There is a woman in the chat room
who's lost 94 lbs in two months. So many things are involved, genetics, how
long fat, where the weight is carried and so on. On the other hand, even
though I started out at a really high weight I'm a slow loser and won't hit
the century mark by 6 months. Personally, I think you could find better
things to worry about and be glad you're losing and losing well.

I think she's lying. Especially when she's being evasive.

I started at 407 and have lost 165 lbs. in 11 months. My doctor is
THRILLED with this speed and so am I. I think your friend is either lying
or very lucky. Regardless, though, judge your own weight loss by what your
doctor says, not in comparison to others on this board. Everyone loses at
a different pace.

From a different angle...Maybe she isn't lying NOW, but she was lying when
she told you her beginning weight. Maybe she actually weighed more than she
would admit to.

It is very possible. I have lost 145 lbs 4 months. My surgery
was on 10-9-01. My dr said that in his patients he has noticed
that the more you weigh when you have wls, the faster you lose,
AT FIRST!!!! I does slow down after 4-6 mos. I started out at
450 lbs and now weigh 305. Also, MEN seem to lose faster than
women, aren't we lucky! All the diets post-ops are following vary
so much. It seems that no one is on the same track. Even
the group of drs where I had surgery do not agree on an exact
diet. They all agree that protein is the most important but
not about other foods. I think that affects the rapid loss
too. I am not concerned about how much, how fast! I am just
happy that I am losing and that it is gone forever. We should
all concentrate on that: GONE FOREVER!!!

It is totally possible. I had my surgery on September 3rd 2004. I started
off at 363 pounds and today I weigh 205. So in almost 7 months I am down
158 pounds. I haven't talked to my surgeon yet for my 6 month appointment
cause I haven't gone yet but once I go I will ask how he feel's about my
weight loss. I have tapered off in the last few months. I have some weeks
where I don't lose at all, some where I drop 1 pound a day and other's only
a pound or 2 a week.
