Question:
Has anyone eventually gone back to eating some of the same foods?

I was just wondering if anyone post-op has gone back to eating anything they did before, like ice cream, candy, etc. and were you just able to eat it in smaller portions?? Thanks so much!! :)    — [Anonymous] (posted on February 9, 2002)

I don't dump... so yes, I started back down the evil path of sweet goodies. I was somewhat dissapointed to realize I could eat this stuff, my best advice, leave it alone and don't see if you can eat it. Anyway... I try to fit in pro and veggies first and not snack on anything but pro and fruit, and only have dessert as dessert, after a meal. This way I can't eat very much at all. Good luck

I am able to eat almost anything in small amounts. There are only a few items that I cannot tolerate. Rice, sunflower seeds, and some sugar-free products give me a hard time. I do eat Breyers no sugar added vanilla (has bean specks in it, yum) and I have it every once in a while when I want it. I had a hotball the other day. But it is a rare thing. Even though I can tolerate the sugar, I just don't want it like before. When I want something sweet, I go for fruit instead. Or a hot cup of decaf tea with splenda. Things that I wouldn't choose as a pre-op. My tastes have changed drastically and I just love it. Good luck.

I can eat almost everything I did before WLS minus the sugar (I use Splenda when it calls for sugar) .. I also can't handle fried or breaded foods.. Other than that I eat very normal with the limits of my pouch (thank goodness).. I fear without the pouch I would be back in the same obese boat...

Yes, I'm finding I can eat anything I want and the tastes for sweets is back. I can also tolerate alot more sugar. I'm disappointed in this. Oh, and I can eat fried foods with no problems.

I can eat anything in limited quanties. Including both good and bad food choices. I dont dump and sometimes wish I did. I TRY not to eat much sugar, but if I eat a big piece of cake I feel icky for 20 minutes or so. I am over 6 months out and my appetite has returned:( I was happier when never hungry.....

I thought it was interesting that as I was reading this question I had some M & Ms in my hand. I know I can eat about a dozen plain M & Ms and do OK. Should I? Probably not. But I don't do it often and I only eat a small amount so I'm not going to get uptight about it. If I go back to the frequency or amount of sweets I used to eat I can see that would be a problem. When I have ice cream I eat sugar free 98% of the time. I do admit that I have had a few bites of my husbands regular ice cream over the last 17 months, but they have been one bite only each time.

What a great question! YES, YES, YES After all, this surgery is abdominal, not neurological. Our brains remain the same. But here's the difference. Pre-surgery, I would down an entire large popcorn at the movie theatre--MYSELF! Now I have a few handfuls of my husband's small, unbuttered popcorn. Pre-surgery, I would eat a family-size bag of Skittles--MYSELF! Now, I have one of those small 1-serving size bags that has about 200 calories. Pre-surgery, I would drink 5-6 sugar-filled soda pops a day. Now, I have an 8 oz. ginger ale on occasion when I'm eating out. Am I wrong for "cheating"? Maybe, but the surgery doesn't let my cheating get so out of hand that it has affected my weight loss. I'm down over 160 lbs. in 11 months.

The surgeon can only staple the stomach, not the brain. I am an addict. But, one bite is too many and a thousand are not enough. I learned it the hard way with a little here and a bite there...between yrs 3 and 5 post op I started grazing, adding back more and more of my old binge foods. the surgery kept the volumes at bay but since the pouch empties out in about 30 minutes, the grazing ability came back with avengeance. I regained 64 lbs before I was able to turn it around. That snack sized snicker bar or m&ms just is not worth the chance of the regain. Today I am maintaining after relosing the wt and getting to goal. I am forever grateful for this tool, I could have regained the entire 218lb wt loss and it was *only* 64 lbs. My best advice is be careful. Pick and choose your splurges very carefully. Hugs, Rita then 463/now bet 189 and 198

I have to say - I eat whatever I want - and if that is a piece of candy then by all means that is what I have - the difference now - I know what moderation is and I am able to eat things in moderation - I know I am not able to eat a whole candy bar or a whole bowl of regular ice cream (because too much sugar does make me sick) - so I usually find substitues or am able to be happy with one small piece of candy - it depends on what I crave - but I no longer have to deprive myslef and I no longer binge like i use too - Good luck........:)
