Question:
What is wrong here??
I had surgery on November 29th Proximal Open RNY..Well I hit my first plateau at 4 weeks post op and it last for 2 almost 3 weeks weeks!!! Then I dropped 4 pounds and now the scale is stuck again. Some days it shows that I have gainied 1-2 pound others it shows I lost it..I have only lost 28 pounds so far...I hear of people who are around 7-8 weeks losing 40 pounds or more...I lost about 20 pounds before surgery..I started out at 256 pounds and I am 5 feet tall.. So yes the 48 pound loss really shows on me and I have been getting many compliments but, I didn't have this surgery only to lose 48 pounds. I am begining to feel like I am going to be "That One Person" it doesn't work for...I am really getting frustrated..Can someone please help me.. — Dusty S. (posted on January 19, 2002)

I was told by my nutritionist that a calorie is a calorie and you MUST cut
them to lose weight, so if he is right and thats how simple it is then you
are just slow at the weight loss thing and it all will come off in the end!
at least the scales are going in the right direction!!

I have not had the surgery yet, but I have seen many people on this site,
say that they have ended plateaus by upping their water intake and making
sure they were getting all their protein. If you're not getting enough to
eat, easily done when you're newly post-op, your body can go into
starvation mode and hang on for dear life to every pound it can.
Therefore, if you eat more, it will finally think it's not starving and
start letting go of the weight.

Dusty,
I know how you feel. At 8 wks I had only lost 42.5 pounds. I am know 5
months out and have lost 78 pounds. (I had/have 162 pounds to lose.) Yes
it is frustrating when you are exercising, eating what your doc tells you
to and you see people post here that their not eating or exercising but
have lost more than you. All I can tell you is, that a nurse, I keep
telling my self that my exercise is good to avoid the risk of organ muscle
wasting (i.e., heart). Yes, I had hope to have lost closer to 100 pounds
right now, but I know I'm trying to do everything I'm supposed to be doing.
But YES, I still have to remind myself that I no longer weigh over 300# -
and soon - will be under 200# for the first time in years. Keep the faith
- follow you doc's plan and I do believe you will succeed.

Dusty, as you know we all lose at different rates. I would suggest you
look at profiles that are more similar to your own. Mine, for example.
I'm just 4'11" and I started out at 218. I gained 19lbs while in the
hospital, due to IVs and blood that I had to be given. So, I left the
hospital at 234. At 8 weeks post-op I had lost 30lbs from my original
weight of 218. If you count the fact that I entered the hospital at 215
its only 27lbs. At 9 months I am now down 72lbs with only 29lbs left to
make my goal weight of 117lbs. Not bad, really. Yes, there are people who
have done better than me but if the norm is that you'll lose 65% of your
weight in the first year, then I am ahead of schedule. *grin*<p>
By the way, I hit my first plateau at just 3 weeks post-op and have
experienced many since then. If you are not fluid loading be sure to add
that to your routine, its very important to your long term ability to be
successful from all that I've read and experienced so far. Best wishes to
you in your continuing journey!

Dusty, I've been where you are and I can tell you it will happen, slowly
but it will happen. I am one of those people who lose slow and steady then
hit a plateau. My longest plateau lasted 8 weeks, that's 2 months and no
weight loss! I was MAD, but then I stepped on the scale and boom, lost 7
pounds in a matter of a couple of days. Alos, I weighed myself 4 to 5
times a day (can we say OCD?). It will come off, don't beat yourself up.
I feel for you because I've been there, and I'm still there. I'm one year
out and have now lost about 110 pounds. I have 25 more pounds to go to
goal. Good Luck to you and hang in there it gets better. God Bless, Hugs!
