Question:
I am 2weeks post-op and I am having a difficult time with the pureed food diet. I've
been eating beans, tuna salad & chopped liver on saltines, small bites of chicken, and flounder with spinach. The chopped liver and the beans feels too heavy. I haven't had diarrhea or vomiting either. I am scared I might stretch my pouch and not lose any weight. Does anyone have any suggestions about what to eat? — Cheryl J. (posted on January 2, 2002)

Every surgeon will recommend a different diet. Mine recommended purees
from the time I got home from the hospital and for another 4 weeks. At
about 2 weeks I couldn't take it any more. I started on soft things -
cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, yoogurts, cream soups - that sort of thing.
Some of the things you're eating seem to be a little heavy, but it's a
'trial and error' type of thing. As far as slowing down your loss, it
didn't seem to hurt mine. I'm 7 weeks out and 30 lbs. down. Not a huge
loss, but I'm a MO of the 'smaller' variety anyway and will not lose as
quickly as someone with more to lose. I say experiment, but do so with
caution.

I hated the liquids diet, but didn't have any problems eating soft foods.
The foods you are eating sound a little rough. Remember that even though
you feel fine, your body is still healing inside. My surgeon recommended
thinly sliced deli meats, yogurt, mashed potatoes, cream of wheat (you can
put protein powder in that or make it with milk), soft-scrambled egg, and
cottage cheese. Be kind to your body and let it heal a bit before you eat
regular food!

Girl, you are eating regular foods, not pureed foods!! Pureed foods are
like chicken noodle soup put through the blender until it is creamy! Extra
creamy mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, malt-o-meal, bananas pureed into
your protien shake... stuff like that! If you want a really good list,
email me!
Get off those regular foods and let your stomach heal. The discomfort you
feel is your body telling you it isn't ready for those foods!! Be nice to
your pouch... and don't try to go too fast with food. we need lots of time
to heal, and the better you heal, the fewer problems you will have in the
long run! :)

I am 2 weeks out and I couldnt handle the pureed foods either. My doc said
that I could go to soft foods. Im very careful what I eat and I chew it
very well. I wasnt getting all the protein that I needed because I couldnt
eat pureed meat any more. Girl, Just be carefull what your doing.
