Question:
Does Mercy Scrips hospital have gowns that cover your back side?

Does Mercy Scrips Hospital have gowns that cover our back end? I want to know because I may need to purchase a robe. But I'm thinking a robe may be a problem if I have to walk with an IV. Any suggestions are appreciated and please describe in detail your preadmission and postop feelings and care. Oh...did they allow you to take a personal item with you into surgery? I was hoping to take a scapular and a religious medal. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Hope to be on the "other side" soon.    — J V. (posted on December 9, 2001)

I don't know the answer to your specific hospital, but you could always wear two gowns. One normal, and one open like a robe. This way it would cover you all the way around.

Hi Joan! Mercy has very large gowns that you can tie to cover your posterior. After surgery, I honestly wouldn't have cared if I was butt naked, though. You're out of it, so your perspective changes. However, I would recommend you bring a robe. You may have a hard time tying your gown after surgery and you can drape your robe over your shoulders (as I did) to keep covered and warm. Feel free to e-mail me at [email protected] with any other Mercy or Pacific Bariatric questions.

Joan - I had my surgery at Mercy and it was fine. They will have everything you need. The things I brought that I was glad I did: toothpaste, etc., a CD player with relaxing music, house slippers w/rubber feet that you can SLIP ON -- no bending down!! Best of luck to you. Open RNY 7/17/01

Regarding taking personal items into the OR...the answer would be no to that. They don't let you take anything, or wear anything. Once you're in there and most likely under anesthesia, you have everything taken off you anyway for abdominal surgery. I gave my dad an angel pin before his back surgery and they wouldn't even let him put it on his hospital gown that he wore TO the OR. Best to keep personal items that you value in your room or at home. Hugs, Joy

+ J.M.J. + You should be able to wear a scapular as it is made of wool. Anything made of metal is not permitted in O.R.s. May God guide the hand of your surgeon and give you peace.
