Question:
How much weight can I expect to lose being 5'6, 240 lbs., a diabetic
an underactive thyroid. I posted earlier, but part of my question was left off. Thank you to those who answered the other. Does anyone out there have similar measurments and problems? Any info would be appreciated. Thank you! :) — Jan H. (posted on December 5, 2001)

Everyone is different when it comes to weight loss. You have to remember
that this surgery is a tool and you are in control of your weight loss.
They weight loss key for me has always been water. I am 15 months post op
and still losing a pound a week. I had my thyroid removed in 1998 and I
was a diabetic before surgery. I have lost 319 pounds. I went from 469
to 150 in 15 months. Please feel free to e-mail me anytime if I can
help.

I am 7 weeks out, 5' 4", and also a diabetic. I weighted in at the
surgeon's office this last Monday. Ive only lost 28# so far. I was very
discouraged and feeling like a failure. My surgeon reassued me, though,
that SLOW weight loss is much better for us diabetics because we can NOT
afford to have low blood sugars! Make sure your PCP knows what youre going
through and have him/her adjust your meds while youre in the hospital. Meds
like Avandia and Amaryl are very bad for us after surgery because they are
the ones that cause the lows. I am still on 1/850 mg tablet of Glucophage a
day. Down from 8 pills a day! WooHoo! So... if you arent losing at a fast
rate, its okay. I had to tell myself this many times. Slower is better! It
will probably help with the sagging skin down the road. Good luck! God
bless!
