Question:
3 questions about post op eating drinking.
1. Why do you have to sip instead of drink normally as long as we don't gulp? 2.Why no straws? 3. Can we eat just baby food while we are on the pureed diet? — [Anonymous] (posted on October 30, 2001)

That may be true depending on your doctor or how far post-op you are, but
just 1 or 2 days ago, a question similar to this one was asked. Many of us
find we can drink quite a bit of water and we aren't stuck with little tiny
sips. I personally use straws--when I go out and I don't know about the
baby food, I would think it would be ok as long as it didn't have sugar.
But, I would get tired of baby food...I would want to puree my own stuff.
I never pureed a single thing **embarresed** I just chewed real well!

Hi...The reason for the sipping is that our opening into our stomach is
small and the sipping makes it easier to enter so it wont come up again.
The reason for no straws is because it can cause gas too much air enters.
However I use straw everyday. I am now 2 1/2 months out and have had no
problems. As for the baby food I never ate any of that. I had scrambled
eggs and oatmeal as well as carnation instant breakfast sugar free of
course. Baby food just didnt do it for me....*LOL* Now I am on a regular
diet and I can eat just about anything I want of course the portions are
sooo small I eat less then my 3 yr old. It is great. Hope this helped...

Just an FYI, my surgeon told us to USE straws. I did not experience any gas
or have any problems with them. In fact, it was easier to drink with it.
It amazes me that there are so many differing opinions about post op care.
I have come to realize that there is no right or wrong way. No one really
knows FOR SURE what the best post op protocal is. So, just follow YOUR
surgeon's advice.
