Question:
Has anyone else developed a strong desire to have a baby this soon after surgery?

I'm 16 weeks post distal RNY. I lost about 78lbs. so far. I have been infertile before surgery and so I am childless. I knew going into surgery that if I ever wanted to make another attempt at conceiving, that it would have to wait until I was 1 1/2 - 2yrs. post-op. Well, I'm 4 months out & I have this burning desire to have a baby. Since surgery, my periods have been coming ea. month on their own (whereas before I only got a period with the help of Provera), AND midcycle I'm noticing all the signs of fertility so I do believe that I'm ovulating (this never happened pre-op w/o fertilty drugs). It's apparent that my small weight loss (small compared to how much I still need to loose) has jump-started my biological clock back into action. I REALLY want a baby NOW!!! I'm 30yrs. old and I don't know if I can wait another year! I always wanted a baby, but just before and shortly after surgery, I was fine with waiting. But now it seems like these feelings are getting stronger each day. I know I need to avoid pregnancy, but it'll be torture! Am I alone in this? Has this happened to anyone else?    — lalasmommy (posted on September 10, 2001)

You are almost answering your own question! Your hormones are back up and running. These are causing you to want to have a baby. BUT - Don't do it!!!!! This is way too dangerous. Even if you are willing to risk your own health to have this baby, are you wishing to risk the health of the baby? There is no way that you will be able to take in the proper nutrition so soon after your surgery. Give yourself some time to heal and to adjust both mentally and physically. Think with your head, not your hormones! God bless!

I know exactly how you are feeling. I am almos 6 months post op, down 100lbs, and everyday wanting to get pregnant. My doctor said to wait at least 18 months, I think I could hold out for that. I still have another 60 lbs to lose, so I am really pushing to get that off, so if I should hit my goal, and my weight loss stops, I will then go ahead and try. TRy to get all your weight off 1st, and then concentrate on the baby issue. I just keep thinking how cute I will look being thin and pregnant. I had my 1st daughter at 311 lbs, and some people couldn't even tell I was pregnant. I think waiting to lose all the weight will make this pregnancy easier and healthier. GOOD LUCK!!
