Question:
I was interested in the duodenal switch surgery and was looking for a surgeon in the
Oklahoma City area. I then noticed there were no surgeons that does this in the state of OKla. Does anybody know why, other than the needed qualifications for this? Maybe this type of surgery is to old, to new, or too risky? I was just very curious about this. Thanks...Myrna E. — Myrna E. (posted on August 13, 2003)

Myrna: The DS IS a very complicated surgery. There are a handful of
surgeons who are able to perform it. It is also the most malapsorptive of
the surgeries, so vitamin compliance is ESSENTIAL for LIFE. I am 2 1/2
years post-op DS and have not had any problems with my labs --- I do take
my vitamins regularly. I've lost about 150 lbs -- 100 pct -- of my weight!
:) The website www.duodenalswitch.com has a LOT of information, links and
has a list of surgeons who perform the DS. I personally don't know of any
in Oklahoma... you will most likely have to go out of state to get it done
(many DO since they believe it is the best surgery for them). Only you can
make this decision -- I suggest getting to that website and corresponding
with as many post-ops as you can to find out their experiences. :) There
is also a great list on yahoogroups called 'duodenalswitch'. It is
tremendously active, well-visited by pre and post-ops alike and full of
information! I wish you the best on your journey. Teresa

Hi Myrna, I just want to agree with Teresa and add that if your insurance
will not cover going out of state, the surgeons in Brazil and Spain are
excellent and fairly low cost. They have their own Yahoo groups; if you go
to http://groups.yahoo.com/ and search the word duodenal, you'll find all
the relevant groups. Self-paying for DS is extremely worth the investment
if there is anyway you can swing it. It was certainly the best money I ever
spent!

Chris: Thanks for adding that - I've read of quite a few people who had
their DS in Brazil and thought it was a great experience and that there is
a competent surgeon there (Dr. M... I can't spell it! LOL). thanks for
providing the link, too! :) All the best, Teresa
