Question:
Does anyone know of a procedure called a menomitry?
I am not sure of the correct spelling. All I know is it is a tube in your nose. It stays there for 24 hours. — Teri C. (posted on May 12, 2003)

I had a PH Manometry right before my surgery last year. It's a test my
surgeon uses to montior the production of acid in the stomachs of her
patients with a history of GERD (Acid Reflux). It also tests the 'motility'
of the esophageus. Since WLS reduces the size of the stomach (in the
RNY/BPD and DS) it's important to know if you're prone to excess acid
production. I am, and to protect my esophageus post op, I take 300 mg of
Zantac daily, and will for the rest of my life. The test wasn't the most
comfortable thing, but it wasn't painful, and I'll be testing again at a
year out just to see if anything has changed. I hope this helps you.

I had this done too. It wasn't pre-op, but actually for a medical study i
helped in. The nasogastric tube is inserted in ur nose, down to your
stomach, to measure your gastrc PH over 24 hours. It's attached to a little
device with buttons for: when u eat, lie down, etc (to explain any changes
in the recording). Its a little uncomfortable (but not painful) when its
getting inserted, and slightly when it comes out the next day. But while
its in, its not too bad. The only thing is that it prevents ur epiglotis
from completely closing when u swallow so be prepared to feel funny when u
try swallowing. Best of luck !!

I had this done summer of 2000. For me it was 2 register the acid from the
GERD in my stomach but also to monitor the times I was "thinking"
I was having the acid back up into my esophagus. I have Barretts Esophagus
and had surgery in Aug. 2000 called Nisson Fundlopication for the acid
reflux. It wasn't terrible. Uncomfortable yes, and I had to wear this for
24 hrs. For me, the worst part was putting it in and taking it out.
