Question:
Is there any way to prevent hernias after the operation?
I've read a few posts about people's hernias after surgery and I'm wondering is there any way to prevent a hernia from developing after surgery? No heavy lifting? — kathleen-Joan piper (posted on March 26, 2003)

Exactly... no heavy lifting. Also, keep in mind that hernias are possible
during the first full year after your surgery. I met a gal the other day
that was 8 months out and ending up having a hernia operation the other
day. Too, keep your muscles toned and exercised (when you are clear to do
so) and that will help avoid the hernias. Good luck!

Get LAP surgery. The incisional hernia risk is near zero. Opens get hernias
because the muscle wall is cut. Lap just puts holes in it. LAP has less
pain and faster recovery too.

My surgeon said to be especially careful not to do any heavy overhead
lifting. He suggested that I could work up to lifting almost anything as I
feel ready but to avoid lifting anything heavy over my head for at least a
year.
