Question:
preop today told I had to have short RNY only. Surgery is in 6 days!
How do I get my insurance co. BCBS to approve a long limb RNY instead of a short RNY. My doctor says with my body build I need a Long RNY. My surgery is in 6 days for a short limb RNY.. How can I get it approved that fast for a long RNY? I just found this out today when I was having my preop! HELP — Debbie A. (posted on August 6, 2002)

Are you talking about a proximal RNY as vs. a distal RNY? If so, then
don't worry ... the proximal works almost as well. I had a proximal 16.5
months ago and have already lost nearly 200 lbs. Also, I haven't had
problems with malnutrition, gas, etc., which are common complaints of those
who have the distal bypass. I started out at a higher BMI than you, so
don't worry, you'll be fine.

Get your surgeon to get on the phone with the insurance co. asap just to
make sure it will be covered. You have already been approved for the WLS,
which is the big hurdle, I do not think that a change in the length of the
limb will be a big deal to the insurance co. I should be the same recovery
time etc. But make sure you do not have a glitch at the last minute. If
the surgeon or his/her office doesn't call, you make the call. Good luck
and congratulations on being so close to the losing side.

Debbie,
Have you asked your doc the cost difference between the two surgeries??
Can you afford the cost difference? Also, ask your surgeon if he would do
it anyway..
