Question:
Dr Michael Murr - Tampa - Can anyone recommend him?
Does anyone have any information on him? His qualifications??? How do you find out about any surgeon? And just how good they are? Please help...I'm scared. I want to make the right choice since he will hold my life in his hands. — Linda D. (posted on August 8, 2001)

Hello. I was interested in Dr. Murr in Tampa and went to the support group
meeting. I'm sure he is a good surgeon, but he was NOT at the meeting. I
went to the meeting about 2 months ago (or more) and still have not
received a return phone call for a first appointment. It's ridiculous! In
my opinion, they don't seem to care or want new patients. I also thought
his death rate was a little high. I think it was 4 or 5 patients out of
175. I realize that some people don't follow instructions after surgery
and all that, but this seems high to me. I have decided on another surgeon
in Miami. The best way is to go to the doctor finder on this site, click
Florida and then look at all the opinions from people who have had the
surgery and email them. Also, go to a support group to see how you feel.
I went to two before deciding on the third doctor. Also, check out their
credentials and see if they have had any claims brought against them in the
past 10 years. I believe the website for this is dohfl.com or .org. I
hope this helps you. I'm sure Dr. Murr is good, but I've heard it can be
about a year wait!

I hear Dr. Murr is a very good surgeon. I however was not willing to wait
the 9 months to see him, then the addtional 6 months for the surgery. I
live in Tpa., but I am goint to Dr. Haiken in Largo. You can see him
within 2 weeks and if all goes well surgery is a possibilty within 3 to 4
months. He takes HMO.
There is also a Dr. Butler in St. Pete who can see you within days.
If your like me once you made the decsion you wanted to move forward.
I have had my first appt. and am scheduling my pre-evaluation
appointments.
Good Luck

I had my first appointment with Dr. Murr July 9th after waiting 9 months.I
felt totally at ease after meeting him and his staff. The office staff is
wonderful and his Bariatric coordinator, Martha Entel is wonderful.I have
already had my Psyche, my Dietician evaluation, and my Pulmonologist exam.
All went well. I am now awaiting results to be sent to Dr Murr and I need
to attend one of his support meetings. I am in the process of getting
cleared by my insurance...which is very hard and time consuming. I
definitly rate Dr. Murr among the best. He explained everything in great
detail and made me and my husband feel comfortable. Whenever I have a
question..all I have to do is e-mail Martha and I have a response within 24
hours. I also did a little shopping for a surgeon and feel I made a good
decision. Good luck to you in your search. I will update when I get my
second visit scheduled...which wil be after attending support group.
