Question:
Can you take diet pills again after rny surgery?
Diet pills like Fastin when you hit plateaus and stop losing weight via the procedure? Will these hurt your stomach like aspirin? — [Anonymous] (posted on June 3, 2001)

The information I have in my aftercare packet states - "do not take
any diet supplements, weight loss pills, fat burners, etc. These products
have a high potential for causing problems which could result in medical
complications and require you to return to the hospital."
Hope this helps - just drink more water, get all your protein and increase
exercise - you will get through the plateau..............good luck.

Since having surgery almost five months ago, I've lost nearly 60 lbs. I can
honestly say that I think that loss would be significantly LOWER if I had
not continued taking phentermine AFTER surgery.

Although I get full quickly while I am eating, the feeling passes sooner
rather than later, and I want to shove food into my mouth non-stop. So I
continue to take an appetite suppresant so that I won't constantly eat
(which is how I got morbidly obese in the first place).

The phentermine was prescribed by my PCP (primary care physician) - who
recommended me for WLS - about six weeks after surgery. I haven't had any
problems taking it or tolerating it, and it has saved me from
myself.

I have not had the surgery yet but I could see myself in your position
because my appetite never goes away. I had gastroplasty 20 years ago and I
lost about 80 lbs but the surgery stopped working after awhile and now I am
over 450 lbs. It took me a long time to try this again and only after a lot
of work with a counselor who specializes in binge eating disorder. I have
this and maybe you may want to look into some books or websites that have
questions that can help you determine if you are a binge eater. Counseling
helped me immensely and I am still learning more and more everyday. It is
not about the food at all it is about stress, anxiety, loneliness,
celebration and almost anything else.
The other thing I know is that I am sugar and carbohydrate sensitive and
the more you eat breads, potatoes, starches, etc you will crave food within
1-2 hours again. You have to suffer through about a week of just protein
and fat and you will loose some of those cravings for these foods. This is
not easy to do I know otherwise I would not be seeking surgery again but I
am scared for you to use those pills. The side effects are horrible and as
soon as you stop using them your appetite returns so it does not do any
good in the long run.
Try the Carbohydrate Addicts Book or Sugar Busters, look into counseling
and gastric bypass support group and overeaters anonymous. These are the
tools I have in place to assist me in addition to surgery and with this and
prayer I hope I am successful.
These are my suggestions to you and good luck I wish you all the success in
whatever you attempt in this endless battle of the bulge.
