Question:
Will a person with a BMI OF 39-40 qualify for VGB?
I have a BMI of 39-40, I ma 5'3 and 25 years of age. I have a lot of medical problems high cholesterol, acid reflux, severe internal hemorroids and arthritis. I am currently a kindergarten teacher it seems like everyday it gets harder and harder to keep up with the children. I have tried everything, even drastic measures like jaw wiring. I seem to be gaining weight by the week. I know that if i don't qualify now my weight will balloon up pretty soon to where i will qualify. I would prefer to have it now because i've taken a leave of absence because of my weight problems. It may seem like i'm being a baby about things but i have a very small frame this weight is extremely uncomfortable. I don't think my insurance will be a problem, i have healthlink. But i was a little concerned with qualifying in the eyes of a doctor. I currently live in St. Louis, Missouri. — [Anonymous] (posted on March 23, 2001)

I'm 22 with a similar BMI and co-morbs and my doctor approved me. Now I'm
just waiting to hear from the insurance. :) I say go ahead and try. If
your PCP isn't supportive, get a new one. The surgeon should be
supportive...otherwise try another one! Can't hurt, could help. Good
luck.
