Question:
How many grams of protein does a person have to have post op?
Please comment if the amount changes as one losses weight. For example give amount at 350, 300, 250, etc. Thanks — Terri C. (posted on October 1, 2000)

The protein mfrs would prefer 1g per lb of body wt. I think that might be
a LITTLE difficult for some of US. We use 60g of supplement as a base for
any WLS pt. If you plateau, go to 90g a day or if you are working out in
addition to regular "life exercise". For someone with more than
150cm bypassed, 90g for daily, maybe 120g for extra. I am more distal than
that so keep between 150-180g a day, of supplement. I eat meats and such,
but never count them toward my protein total. Calcium CITRATE (not tums)
is the preferred form, and we don't take less than 1500mg (elemental
calcium).

About your protien needs- it is based on your "ideal" body
weight- not how much you weigh at the time. For most women the amount
needed is beteen 60 and 75 grams per day. A fist size portion of meat of
chicken or turkey is about 24 grams (there is usually 8 grams of protien
per ounce of meat). Hope this helps!
