Question:
Is there a range of BMI numbers that would indicate WLS should happen?

Today or yesterday I read something that alluded to this in someone's post...My question is: What is the BMI range (if any)that would indicate WLS surgery should take place? Thanks for your responses to this and the other questions I've had. ---Libby    — Libby B. (posted on June 25, 2000)

Most surgeons and insurance companies seem to follow these guidelines. If your BMI is above 40, your health risk is considered very high, and weight loss surgery is an option. If your BMI is between 35 and 40, and your health risk is very high due to other realted health problems (co-morbidities), weight loss surgery may be considered.

When I first went to the doctor they told me my insurance would not pay for surgery because My BMI was 38. It has to be 40 or more before insurance will pay. Hopes this helps out some
