Question:
Has anyone had an ulcer due to this surgery and had to have it removed?

Over three years ago I had my 1st surgery and since then I had developed a bleeding ulcer right where the small intestine and the new stomach are connected. It did not heal with medication and had to have my surgery redone two months ago. Now the ulcer is back and as painful as ever! My doctor and I are at a loss as to what to do. Please help!!    — Danielle H. (posted on March 27, 2005)

I have had several marginal ulcers, as you describe, however, they were treated successfully with meds. I also had a 30 yr history of regular ulcer. You didn't mention the meds regimen you are on, which foods/beverages you are avoiding, taking in.......?

I developed an ulcer about 6 monhts post op and had to have it removed at a year out. I was good to go for about a year before I developed another. I didn't want to have surgery again, so I tried EVERYTHING I could. This is what worked for me..... two Nexium per day (one did nothing) and a diet of 50% raw foods. A month later it was under control and didn't hurt anymore. I still take one Nexium per day and haven't really had pain since last August. Feel free to email me if you wish. Rebecca

I had an ulcer that medications has no effect on - I think they tried 3 different prescriptions, and the ulcer only got worse. In November '04, I had surgery for it. They removed the ulcerated area and the part of my original stomach that produces the hormone responsible for acid production (partial gastrectomy). Without the acid, I should have no further problems with ulcers. The admission nurse at the hospital said that the gastrectomy surgery used to be quite common in treating ulcers, but with all the medications on the market now, they don't see many any more. In removing the ulcers from my pouch, I am now left with a pouch that is about the size of a golf ball. I'm very close to my goal weight, so now have to eat very small amounts frequently. Never in my life thought I would be concerned about losing too much weight! Please e-mail me if I can help you with any other info! It's such a relief to be rid of that ulcer pain.
