Question:
Does anyone know the name of a precription iron supplement?
When I was pregnant prior to wls...my doc had me on an iron supplement that was "gentle" on the system... Most iron supplements cause me to belch them all day and I can't tolerate that. Does anyone have an idea what the name of them might be?? Thanks for your input... — Peggy T. (posted on June 10, 2004)

Mine was called SlowFE. I don't remember it being harsh.

Prior to the surgery I had received iron IV @ the hemotologist's ofc. It
was like 4 treatments and it restored my "stores". I've been
taking slow fe orally so far but may need to get IV again.

I take Foltrin capsule. It's a generic for the brand name
"Trinsicon". It's covered by my insurance (Blue Cross of
California, PPO), so I only pay $5.00 for a 30 day supply.

I don't take a prescription iron but I know the one I take doesn't hurt my
stomach at all. It is called carbonyl iron. Also, as a gastric bypass
patient, we aren't good at absorbing any iron sulfate. My nutritionist
says that fumarate iron is also absorbed well.

The one that is hard on the tummy (sulfate) is the easiest to find. I
looked in 10 different places before finding the Vitron C at a Longs Drug
Store. That iron is the femurate, it is more gentle on the tum-tum.

Peggy...I had to take an iron supplement several years ago because of a
very low hemaglobin. I got my supplement at Walmart and it was their store
brand, Equate. It was a generic ferosol. It was non-constipating and I
took two pills each day. Contact your pharmacist and he/she should be able
to tell you what would be best for you. Hope this helps.
