Question:
has anyone experienced dumping without vomiting?
Sometimes if I eat sugarie foods, I will feel very nervous and shakey..but I dont feel like vomiting. Has anyone ever experienced this? Is this dumping or something else? — Yvonne S. (posted on May 25, 2004)

I have never vomited since WLS. I do get the same reaction you described
when I eat too much sugar. I've always thought it was a form of dumping.
Doesn't always happen, just some of the time.

I do not vomit when I dump, I feel very tired, queasy, & get diahrea
later. I have only vomited if I forgot to chew well enough. Or if I eat
rice from a chinese place or that is not just freshly cooked.

Never vomited, however I felt the world go around and around
and around.....I was dizzy and sweaty and had terrible stomach
cramps and thought I was going to die! I have only vomited
once --drank too much of protein shake and was so full--I forced myself to
do to releave so of the pressure in my stomach.

I don't see how people would vomit when they dump because the food has to
be in the intestines to dump. It takes a lt to go all the way back into
the stomach to vomit.

Same here. Don't vomit. Just get very nauseous and need to lay down.
I've found a few methods of combating the dumping, however. It depends on
the situation I'm in. But, I've noticed that I don't dump when I'm really
busy or have something I can do - like go for a walk and get fresh air -
then the dumping subsides really quickly. Also, chomping on ice helps a
lot and eating a peppermint, usually Altoids, works nicely too. Did you
know that peppermint is a natural remedy for nausea? True. I'm a year
post-op and my dumping time is much less than in the beginning. I used to
be "out" for 2 hours after dumping, now it's down to about 30-40
minutes if it hits me hard.

Yvonne...I have experienced those symptoms. My heart will race, my hands
start to shake so hard that I cannot even hold a glass or eating utensil in
my hands without dropping it. I have not eaten ANY sugary food since my
surgery 20 weeks ago. I spoke with my surgeon on my 4 month visit and he
thinks it may be hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). He told me to immediately
drink some orange juice and to eat something. He stated this would bring
my blood sugar up within a few minutes. The worst attack I had was
yesterday. I felt as if I was going to faint before I could get the juice
poured. I actually had to lay down and spread some crackers with peanut
butter and eat them and drink a little of the juice. The symptoms
disappeared after about 20 minutes, but it was scary because this is the
worst I'd had so far. I'd had the shaky feeling along with the racing
heart but not this bad. You probably should speak with your surgeon or his
nurse or even your dietician to make them aware of your symptoms. I'm sure
they can help you better than I can.

Hi,
I have the same symptoms. I don't think that it is dumping because I have
dumped before. The Dr. thinks this is a blood sugar problem related to
hypoglycemia as another poster stated. The Dr. told me that the best thing
to do was to stay away from refined sugar or processed sugar. I can still
eat fruits but no real sweets (cake, cookies, pies, or any of those things
that got me obese in the first place). The Dr explained the whole process
to me as follows: When I eat something sweet, my pancreas starts secreting
extra insulin to break down all of the sugar, it is almost like a sugar
high. Once the sugar is processed, my blood sugar level drops and causes
the shakes, dizziness, and cold sweats. It is horrible. I hope that this
helps. You still might want to get your Dr to do a blood glucose test.

Same happens to me on any sugar - to me, if it happens more than once,
don't do it.<br><br>
Just a comment on:
"I don't see how people would vomit when they dump because the food
has to be in the intestines to dump. It takes a lt to go all the way back
into the stomach to vomit."<br><br>
Believe me, that happens to some of us extremely sensitive dumpers. Well,
if you eat slowly, and some of the sugar hits the intestines in the salvia
and small bits of food, what is in the stomach will come back up. Also, I
have gotten sick 30 minutes after eating, but it is dry heaves. Frankly,
I'd rather vomit up food than have the pain of the heaves. I don't think
that for most of us, the intestines are that far from the tiny little
pouch...

I haven't vomited since my RNY surgery over 2 1/2 years ago. I don't have
the "lift" it takes to force it out. Dumping for me is the
shakes, sweats and generally feeling VERY miserable with a horrible stomach
ache. I would rather throw up just to feel better.
