Question:
Has anyone been diagnosed with hypothyroidism post-op?
I have never had any problems with my thyroid until now. I am 4 months post op and was wondering if this was somewhat normal? — Marianne513 (posted on May 22, 2004)

do you consume a lot of soy products? Many of the shakes, bars and
low-carb stuff have high soy contents. There's a huge connection between
high soy consumption and thyroid problems. Just a thought. Good lcuk!

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism years BEFORE my surgery. Since my
surgery, I've been able to reduce my need for synthroid by half. My doctor
tells me he feels I not not eventually even need it!

HI - I have had a hypothyroid for several years and take a high dosage . I
was just chk'd acouple weeks ago and it is still the same . I am three
months out this week from surgery and have lost (only) 50 pounds . My
surgeon and pcp , say the dosage might go down , but usually thyroid is for
life . So I can figure to have to take meds for it for ever .

I don't see how there could be any connection between the surgery and being
diagnosed with thyroid problems. Thyroid problems, particularly in women,
can go undetected for years and years because the symptoms can mimic many
other things. So you may have had hypothyroidism for years and not known
it. However, from what I have been told, soy products can cause problems
with the thyroid as they bind with the thyroid hormone and prevent proper
function.

Sometimes during severe weight loss your metabolism goes into
"starvation mode" and the production of thyroid hormone bottoms
out. Once your weight is stable your thyroid function might not return to
an optimum level.
