Call your doctor because it may. Not trying to discourage you but, it's a chance.

Hi, I am not forsure, my surgeon did not require me to lose weight before surgery just try to maintain it, but I know that some do require it because of the fatty liver thing, but since youdid lose all of the weight required at first then it is something you need to discuss with your surgeon, he may not cancel your surgery especially since youdid try to lose it! good luck to you!

My surgeon would cancel in a heart beat. Not only is he trying to make you healthier for surgery, he is looking for a commitment on your part. How close are you to surgery? Maybe you can get it back off or maybe he won't weigh you again.

If they are weighing you, it is usually for that reason. Get it back off if you can.

More than likely he will if he told you to lose 25 pounds. basically you have only lost 11.

Have you had a 'final weigh in'? If not, then I'd say you've got a problem. Also, speak to others who use your Dr. and see what their experience was. Did they have a final weigh in? Did they get weighed before surgery? That should help you.

Hi, Though my surgeon did not require us to lose weight, I've heard that others can be very strict about this. Your profile says that your surgery is 5/04, but you do not have any personal notes in it so I don't know the exact date. I'll assume (for worst case scenario) that it's 5/3/04, which is the first business day in May (I assume surgery wouldn't be on a Saturday or Sunday). That still leaves you with 12 days to lose 14 pounds, which you can do on a liquid low carb protein diet with LOTS of water. You may be able to lose it even by using low or no carb protein shakes for breakfast and lunch and by eating 3 oz of chicken with a few mushrooms or something for dinner. I know it's going to be very hard, but if it means having or not having the surgery in May, if it were me I would do whatever it took! I wish you the BEST of luck no matter what!!!

I wanted to reply to Beverly about why a doctor would ask you to lose weight prior to surgery. There are many VALID reasons for this. The most important one is that even a 10 to 15 pound weight loss will significantly reduce the size of your liver thereby making the visibility in the surgical field better. This reduces the chance of your needing to be converted from lap to open. Another thing is that the 25 pound weight loss prior to surgery will positively effect blood sugar even if you're not diabetic. This aids tremendously in the healing process. The weight loss also reduces the stress on your cardiac and pulmonary systems. I assure you that doctors recommend preoperative weight loss ONLY with the patient's best interest in mind. We encourage all of our patients to start their calcium citrate, B-12, protein supplements and vitamins 6 weeks prior to surgery. This generally promotes some weight loss but it also makes the patient healthier and helps the patient to develop a routine similar to the one they'll experience after surgery. Losing a few pounds prior to weight loss surgery is the best thing you can do for yourself healthwise. I know everyone has the last supper - I sure did! But, gaining alot of weight in a little time while waiting to have surgery is not good for you at all. Hope this helps you understand why many doctors want you to lose some weight BEFORE surgery. Best wishes!
