Question:
WHY DO THE VITAMINS MAKE ME SICK?? HELP!!

I have tried several types of vitamins... (I am nearly 5 mos post op open RNY) several chewables and some pre natals... today I purchased some more.. these are called Source of Life liquid... got them at a health food store.. The clerk sold me by saying the reason the others made me sick were cause they were 'synthetic' and these were all natural.. well it all sounded great... so I bought them and took the horrendous tasting stuff when I got home and within the hour had terrible nausea, burning knawing type pain.. then burping.. etc. This has happened each and every time I take a vitamin. I am desperate cause I know I need them.. I feel run down! If anyone can offer any suggestions.. I took it after eating as directed so my stomach wasn't empty. I had waited about 20 mins so it also wasn't too full. I don't know what to do!! Thanks... Pam in GA — Pam B. (posted on March 1, 2004)

Have you tried capsules? It is the only way I can take my vitamins or calcium. Good luck

I've found that when I take my vitamins in the morning or during the day, I get horrible nausea. My solution is I take my pre-natal vitamin and iron pill at night right before I go to bed. I haven't had any problems and I'm getting my vitamins in.

Does your doctor know about this? I would certainly discuss this with him, and see if there are any other alternatives - prescription vitamin injections? If it has gone on this long, I'm sure he/she would want to know what is happening with you.

I had this trouble too until I started taking my vitamins with milk. I take them with my Carnation Instant Breakfast in the morning and I don't get the burping, nausea and other nasty symptoms. I also have switched to taking them before bed sometimes and that works, too. Also, I agree with another poster that capsules are better if you can find them. Good luck!

You may not be able to absorb the vitamins orally. You shoudl discuss this with your doctor. They may suggest liquid childrens' vitamins or you may need to receive them by injections, which is what I have to do. It's not as bad as it seems though. There are alot of injections the first 2 weeks and than it'll be 1 injection once a month, but you'll feel great afterwards, I promise.

I haven't been able to take "regular" vitamins for years. They always made me ill. I heard Andrew Lessman speak on TV and how the "fillers" in vitamins can make people ill and the more he talked the more I knew he was talking right to me. I switched to his vitamins years ago and never had a problem. They are capsules and contain no fillers. He now sells thru HSN and his own website yourvitamins.com

When I knew vitamins were an important part of my recovery as a post-op I called the company directly and discovered that the capsules could be taken apart and mixed with food/water OR if using a blender could be put in whole and mixed with a protein drink or any fluid. There is basically no taste to them. I checked with my surgeon and dietitian and they agreed the vitamins would be a good choice for me.

Well, I do not necessarily think that it is because some of them are synthetic or not made of natural materials. I tend to lean more to the explaination of taking them on an empty stomach may make you sick. I used to take Shaklee adult Vita Lea (their multi vitamin) and they would sometimes make me sick to my stomach (pre op). Shaklee viatims are not synthetic supplements. I now take Shaklee's children's chewable Ocean Wonders multi vitamin. I do not have problem with getting sick from them. Try eating like you are, wait a while like you did then take a couple more bites to "sandwich" the vitamin btwn the food.

I too, up until I was post op of 5 months, couldn't take ANY vitamins, my hair fell out, etc..only could drink milk for the first 3.5 months. Literally. No eating, no protein, nothing. had a horrible run, threw everythingup. Now I take VITABALL vitamins, CVS pharmacy sells them. They are in gum ball form and very good. You do have to take 2 -3 daily for the absortion issues. i also take Biotin pills and B-12 pills daily. My hair has stopped falling out, I feel better. I'm at (June 13th weighed 272.5) 9 months and 99 pounds gone. i have a hernia that won't be repaired until I'm at my goal weight, so when i excercise it's usually at the gym riding bikes. that way I haven't done more damage to my hernia. i keep thinking I should be losing I'm pretty much standing still, we'll see. TRY VITABALL
