Question:
would like to hear your experience with backpain
Hi gang- Ok in the past 15 months I've lost 170 pounds going from 327 to 156- I always carried most of my weight in the middle- and of course my body (back) always hurt- Now that I've lost so much weight- I am unable to sleep at night due to HORRIBLE back pain- I have seen several doctors including my PCP, a chiropractor a neurologist. I had a CAT scan of my back done- no pinched nerves- to EACH of these doctors I have asked if the pain could be from my large panni I have left over- they all say NO- The reason I thought it might be this, is because I frequent the boards and the chat room- and everyone talks about back pain from boobs/panni - I am curious if anyone else has had back pain from their panni- and was this "cured" with a "tummy tuck" ? Am I just misunderstanding that a panni can cause back pain ?????? Thanks ya'll :) — WABBIT F. (posted on February 8, 2004)

Hi, for me the tt did take away my back pain, I had a large apron of fat
all in front and when I stood for long I got so tired, and had lots of back
pain, also when I slept I put a pillow under my tummy because it pulled so
much. It was such a relief to get rid of it and to be able to stand up
straight and not hurt. I work on my feet all day now never have pain, feel
so blessed to feel good. Sometimes I forget I don't have all that extra out
front and jump up off the couch or out of bed and almost fall over because
I am so much lighter. Praying for you that you will be able to get it taken
care of. I always have said it was the second best thing I had ever done
for myself, first the wls, then the tummy tuck. God Bless you on your
journey, Susie

I too have a large panni, and I have lost 100 pounds and I need to loose 30
more pounds to goal. hen I walk my back kills me, I can stand for long
periods at a time. I too carry all my weight in my middle, I have found
that when I walk (while wearing my coat, hands in my pocket) if I hold up
my apron, I can walk longer and further, and walk more up right. I also
notice while doing water exercises my apron floats up and I have no strain
on my back. I deffintaly think a LBL or tt, would be the answer, even
holding it up in the shower, brings great relief.

Heck, I think you are so right. I have loss 185 lbs in 14 months and I have
a large hanging apron, I always had huge breast, and they hang big times.
To me they really haven't loss that much in them, YES, both of them bother
me. I toss in my sleep from back pain and wake up hurting. I walk also and
my back kills me. I find myself bend forward alot, it's like the weight of
my upper body is drawing me this way. So I think some of those doctors are
full of it.

I stopped asking doctors what was causing the pain (or if it was from the
panni) and started TELLING them my panni was causing the pain - very
forcefully. I don't know why, but it put a different spin on it for them
and they react differently now. Most are helping me argue the point with
my insurance. Good luck!

I've lost 180 pounds since April of 2003, had a VERY large apron as well as
huge hernia. I could not walk for any distance, or stand due to severe
back pain. I would wake up with back pain which would only get worse
during the day. On Janu 12 I had hernia repair and abdominoplasty with 10
pounds of skin removed. Back aches are gone, I can walk and stand with no
problem now.
Back aches are most definately caused by hanging pannus.

I too have had horrid back pain since surgery and I too carried all of my
weight around my middle. I have been within 10 pounds of goal for a couple
of months now and am now just 3 pounds away and as my weight stabilizes my
back has gotten much better. I also had fierce hip pain with all of the
readjustments my body was making and that is gone too. I have started
strenght training and the muscle building is helping greatly. I just do the
basics (push-ups, sit-ups, lunges, squats and a couple others) but I can
notice the muscles really firming up and that muscle really supports your
frame and for me has seriously lessened all of my pains. I also had cat
scans and all of that only to find very little actually wrong with me.

Wabbit, have you had an MRI to see if it could be disc related? When we
lose so much weight our body mechanics change and it could have caused a
herniation of a disc. In fact, something as simple as bending over to pick
something up could cause a herniated or bulging disc. I'd ask about it
just to eliminate it as a possibility. I have had two back surgeries from
herniated discs and still suffer from 1 which I had hoped the WLS would
help but it didnt. If the back pain is caused by a panni, strengthening
the stomach muscles and the back muscles thru physcial therapy and daily
exercises does help. Alot of times the back pain is from muscles that are
not strengthened. and finally, because of my back surgeries I have
arthritis in the lower back that is very painful. Have you asked if that
could be a factor? Does it hurt worse when you first wake up? Thats a
sign...I take bextra or vioxx daily to help with back pain and it has
helped enormously.

Wow I was just asking my support group about lower back pain and sleeping.
They talked about having less padding so while sitting or laying down the
points ache. I think this has some truth to it. Also, the weight loss
rapidly has to have shifted the spine, pelvis, hips etc. I do not have pain
during the day but at night I wake up in severe pain. I usually have to get
an ice pack on the lower back in order to get back to sleep. I found that
putting my feather bed on the matteress has helped. I went tanning the
other day and layed on the bed that is very hard. I felt the pain terribly.
Please post or email me if you find out anything more. I also want to have
a TT but do not have the rash, infection etc. so I am hoping the back pain
will help my chances. Good luck to you
