Question:
Why Can't We Take Timereleased Vitamins!

I asked this question last week but never got a response. Can someone explain why we cannot take time released vitamins. Thanks    — neneburge (posted on February 2, 2004)

Because your stomach passes food, and anything else that goes through it rapidly - doesn't stay in pouch long.

Hey there! I actually read the answer to this in an obesity help magazine the other day. If you want to see if your vitamins are doing you any good for post op, put one in a glass of water and if it doesn't dissolve within 30 min it's not going to help. That's basically what it's going to have to dissolve in when your post op is water. But the other post is correct, it just goes through our system too quickly to help if it doesn't dissovle before we expel it.

It's timed release meds we don't take. Because we do not send the pills into the stomach (chemicals), we do not get normal breakdown of the contents. Capsules dissolve in saliva, not water. Tablets can be tested in saliva-water (rinse your mouth a few times into a small glass). Some of us tested caps today and they released in about 40 seconds. I test periodically because it seems that the pH of the mouth has to do with the timing, but gelatin is gelatin. Timed release (of the contents) is uncertain. Will we get it all? Just the first release? Just the first two? Who knows?
