Question:
I can't eat solid food anymore. Should I be concerned

A couple of weeks ago, I started to feel as if a lump had formed in my stomach. Every time I eat solid food, it feels lumped up and I have the urge to throw it up. The only things that went down easily was soft foods (deviled eggs, hot cereal, etc..) This weekend I am having a hard time eating soft things. Even my protein shake feels like it wants to come up. I can drink fluids OK but not as quickly as I used to. I must admit that I had a couple of days where I had bad days and overate (ate more than my pouch could comft. hold) this last month. Could that have brought on this lumpy feeling? I have an appointment tomorrow with my doctor. I would like to be more specific with him. Has anyone of you had these same symptoms? Should I be concerned. I had my VBG surgery in April of 03 and have done well. 95 pounds off. Thanks Linda K.    — Linda K. (posted on December 15, 2003)

It almost sounds like a stricture forming. At 8 months post-op you should not have a problem with solid food at all. I don't think overeating would have had anything to do with it. We all have bad days now and then. I think you described it well and I would just repeat what you have said here to the doc.

I started having trouble as you describe about eight months out. I had been vomiting every time i tried to eat. My doctor did an endoscopy for another problem and opened my stoma up a little. I had about three or four weeks where i could eat now at ten months out, I cannot eat anything solid.

With a VBG, it couldn't be a stricture, but I have heard of the ring getting too tight. You might want to ask the dr. about that possibility.
