Question:
What does the pre-op liquid diet consist of?
I was told I will need to be on a liquid diet for two weeks before and two weeks after surgery. Can anyone tell what kind of foods I can eat. Can I puree food or can they only be clear? — Robin S. (posted on October 7, 2003)

Robin, you really should check with your surgeon on the specifics they want
for the liquid diet. It is so important to follow your surgeon's
instructions very carefully.

Robin- If you are going on a liquid diet prior to laparoscopic surgery,
the primary need is typically to reduce the size of your liver. Two weeks
of nearly no fats (and no alcohol) is needed to reduce the size of the
liver so that it can be easily moved to the side (this provides a greater
field of view for your surgeon). Some surgeons also desire a liquid diet
to facilitate a more thorough "cleaning out" of the patient
before surgery; if this is the case, then you should definitely check with
the surgeon's office to determine which liquidfied foods will promote the
best effect. Good luck.
