Question:
Does anyone know after OPEN Rny if later gallbladder can be removed LAP?
I am scheduled for Open but at this time my gallbladder is good. My concern is if later it needs to be removed would I be able to have it done Lap or will they have to make another incision. — Diane S. (posted on October 6, 2003)

I had Open RNY in February of this year. Very shortly after, I began
having problems with my gallbladder. I was able to have the gallbladder
removed laparoscopically. The surgeon who did the gallbladder was
different than the one who did the RNY. He said he had done several
gallbladder surgeries on Post-RNY patients and had been able to do them all
lap. The only concern he had pre-surgery was that it hadn't been that
long since the RNY so I was still pretty heavy. I was right at 300 on the
consultation, and 290 on the day of surgery. He was worried that he would
have to switch from the lap to open, but he was successful. With the RNY
scar and the Gallbladder scars, my stomach is beginning to look like a tic
tac toe game, but I'm okay with that.

I had open RNY on Dec 30, 2002. I had to have a large incisional hernia
repaired in June and that was done lap, without problem (a much more
technically difficult surgery than gallbladder removal). I then had my
gallbladder removed lap in July. No problem! Depending on adhesions and
the skill of your surgery, you should be fine.
