Question:
Anyone else always hungry on full liquids?
I'm almost two weeks post op and I'm always hungry. I'm following my Dr.'s plan exactly, which is very strict, I'm on full liquids for 6 weeks before moving on to pureed foods. I don't want to cheat from my Dr.s plan for me, I'm committed, but I'm wondering if anyond else on full liquids so long is always hungry. Two ounces of creamed soups, mashed potatoes, etc just don't stay with me. This isn't head hunger, it's good old fashioned hunger pains. I hope I'm not the only one I'm beginning to wonder if I could have stretched my pouch somehow. Thanks, Nancy — nancysho (posted on September 23, 2003)

I was always hungry until I started on solid food. I too wondered if this
was really going to work, but the first meal of solid food convinced me.
2-3 bites and was stuffed. So dont worry, you will feel fullness when you
start on solid or maybe even pureed foods. good luck and dont get
discouraged.

I don't know if your Dr told you that your "old" stomach will
still send messages to the brain indicating that your are hungry. This
will go away, believe me. When you go to pureed foods, you will be asked
to eat every 2 oz 3 hours. At that point, your body will get used to
eating every 3 hrs, but it is important to only eat 2-3oz otherwise your
stomach will stretch and once you do that, there is not turning back. Good
luck!

Hi Nancy, I am three week post op. From talking to people I have found
that every surgeon is different. I was on clear liquids for two days, and
then while still in hospital they moved me on to pureed foods. My surgeon
recommends this stage from four to six weeks and then I move on to soft
foods for about the same period of time, and then gradually on to regular
food. I have to say I have not experienced any hunger yet, or any head
hunger. I really have to remind myself to eat and get all my protein in.
Good luck!

Nancy,
I am 3 weeks post-op today and just started on pureed foods on the
14th. I felt and stll feel exactly the same way as you! While on the
liquids, I was hungry all the time and figured that something went wrong
and the surgery wasn't gonna work for me. Now that I've started pureed
foods, it is better. I get full with very little and believe me, you will
KNOW when you are full!! We just have to remember not to drink for at least
30 minutes after eating, the liquid pushes the food right out of the pouch
and we are feeling hungry again real soon.
The "Head Hunger" is something that I have to deal with every
night! While watching TV I feel like I am going to starve to death because
of all the @#^$%# commercials about food! I'm learning to close my eyes,
mute the TV and take another sip of water or crystal light! It's really
rough at this stage for us, but we have a great tool to help us learn to
break our old habits. Good luck in your journey baaabby!
