Question:
I am so glad this question was asked, I never new a NG tube could not or should not
be placed down your throat or that a bracelet should be worn for this. Could you explain the reason and concept for this. Thanking you in advance. Joan — Joan T. (posted on September 14, 2003)

With you pouch being so small, it is possible that if the person inserting
the tube was not aware of your operation that they could cause damage to
you by inserting the tube. As it will not go down as far as people that
have not had this surgery. Possibly even tearing or rupturing the pouch. So
to avoid this possibility most doctors suggest wearing a bracelet or
necklace explaining.

As a nurse that has placed many N/G tubes, I can tell you they go down your
nose. For us, they are not to be placed BLINDLY. Your bracelet should
say"Do not place n/g blindly. use endoscopy." The reason Donny
gave is correct.

My dr said to make sure if I ever needed any type of tube or scope, make
sure the dr calls him so he can fully explain what should be done. Says
sometimes drs will assume they know what to do, but he wants to make sure.
