Question:
Is this normal a 2 oz pouch?
Today I had to have an upper GI with a small bowel follow through. The Radioligist told me that my pouch is still VERY small, he said maybe 2 oz. I still have a hard time eating, and my surgery was almost 5 months ago. Does any one know what size the average pouch is at this point? Open rny 3/22/03 Barbara — barbara M. Be thankful your pouch is still small. Your tool is still working!

A 2 oz pouch is normal, my surgeon stated tht in all the studies he has
done and all he has read about, he has never seen a pouch stretch, it is
rare. What can happen is your body will adapt and you will be able to eat
more as time goes on. Five months out is still early.

All of my surgeon's patients get a 1/2 ounce pouch. The amount of bypass
varies on your starting weight with the longest he will do being 150cm. He
said over 12-18 months our pouch will permanently stretch to hold 2-4
ounces, which means it can still stretch more when eating but does not stay
permanently stretched. If my pouch was still 1/2 ounce there is no way I
could eat the 3-8 ounces I eat at a meal. I am 6 months PO.

I was told after surgery my pouch would be 1 oz, and by one year postop it
would hold 1/2 of food (4 oz). Seems like it is probably not too far off
target, but of course see what your surgeon says.

Barbara,
2 oz sounds about right - your pouch was probably 1/2 oz just after the
surgery and is accommodating more foods as you progress. Remember that
after RNY your pouch will stretch to approximately 5-6 oz for life! Don't
stretch it further - and you can - which is why some individuals fail.
Keep focused on your protein, make certain to liquify EVERYTHING that goes
into your mouth, drink 30 minutes prior to and 30 minutes after meals (not
during) and chart your food items with weights and content for
protein/fat/carb/calories. I wish my pouch was still 2 oz - may be then I
could loose these last 10 pounds!
Best Wishes,
