Question:
I am wondering (and sort of SCARED)
I am 5'9" and weigh 310. (I am shaped like an APPLE) I would like to eventually get down to 145-150. Is this possible? Is there anyone out there with similar starting stats that have reached a goal similar to that? My husband seems to think that will be too small, and says that he would like to see me at 160-170. Any opinions? (People seem to think that I carry my weight well. No one ever guesses that I weigh as much as I do.) — BeckyT (posted on July 7, 2003)

I'm currently @ my 12th month post op. I had WLS this past July and
started at your height, 5'9 and weighed 298.50lbs when I checked in. I was
wearing a size 24 jean & some 3x shirts. I'm currently wearing size
12/ 14 pants and regular size L shirts. My current weight is 180lbs. This
year has flown by. This is truly one of the best decisions I have ever
made. My mother has also had WLS in Nov. 2001 She is currently down
130lbs.

I'm 5:11 and 315, down to 193 and want to get to 160, I think 150 would be
fine on you. Lots of people telling me that I should stop now, that 160
would be too thin. I want to at least say I weighed 160 for once in my
adult life and then let my body adjust to it's desired weight (within 5-10
lbs) just my 2 cents. Take care. Good Luck.

My advice to you is to not set a goal at this time. Wait and see how you
feel and look. And your body may well set it's own goal. I am only
5'5" tall and I wanted to get to about 140 -150 (I'm 56 years old).
Well, my body had a different idea of what it needed and I have stopped at
165. And this is 25 pounds less than my surgeon wanted me to weigh. So,
hold off on your final goal til you are close enough to know what you
really want. Instead, set 25 pound goals and celebrate them.

I wanted to respond to your post because I just broke through a heck of a
plateau and am feeling wonderful right now- I still have a ways to go but
at this point I have to tell you that anything is possible! If your
surgeon has set 145-150 as your goal weight- then I'm sure you can reach
it. Sometimes I am hearing that excess skin can be one obstacle to some
posties reaching thier goal but the most important thing to remember is
that we did this to become healthier and to feel good about living. If you
achieve good health and over all feeling good about yourself-numbers won't
mean a thing. I'm so happy to have my life back and even though at this
point in my journey I am paying close attention to those numbers on the
scale- they don't mean a thing compared to how I feel physically and how
much fun I am having with my family again. Looking better is just the
icing on the cake. Your husband will be happy to see you reach your goal
and be healthy- Let's face it, when we're happy they are happy. (smiles)
Good luck to you- I hope you reach your goal. Lynda Bishop: surgery March
28-03, down 75 lbs.

I'm 5'6 started at 324 and today I'm 155. I vascillate between 155 and 165
but don't allow myself to get over that point. It is very possible.
You'll see what you're comfortable with when you get close to your goal. I
had a goal of 160 and am fine with 155. I like that I have a cushion
between 155 and 165. I'm 2 years post. You'll be fine. Even at 155, folks
still think I am in the 140s. Good luck and God bless!

Hi. I started at 255, a little less than you, and am 5'7". I have in
the past gotten as low as 135. I thought I looked good, others said I was
too thin. I have set my goal to be 149, so I could say I was under 150. I
am 173 now, and that isn't too shaqbby either. It is a realistic goal and
you'll look slim, not emaciated. Good luck!
