Question:
What about Carnie Wilson in Playboy?
Hi Friends, I just watched Carnie Wilson on a FOXNews Magazine interview. It was a good interview. I was just wondering what your thoughts are regarding her appearing in playboy? I actually had some questions at our support group about it and found myself not knowing how to answer. One person said it would give other WLS patients the wrong idea causing them to think we'd look like playboy bunnies after surgery. Another said it was a cool thing that she is successful in her weight loss journey. Another said playboy only wanted her because people would want to see if she looked freaky (???) after all the weight loss and follow up plastics. Then of course there were the moral/immoral comments. I was just wondering what everyone else thought about it. I know if it was me there would have to be a ton of AIR to airbrush out all the scars and stretch marks, ha ha. Thanks for the input. — ronascott (posted on June 25, 2003)

I think it is great. She has done so much to get the word out about MO
being a decease, and being in Playboy would be the ultimate praise. (yes, I
know the magazine is a guy magazine) but it just shows men that there is a
skinny, nice looking gal inside the MO gal. No one questioned Carnie's
reason for putting herself out there, and letting everyone know she had
WLS, and as we all know to have WLS is very personnal decision that she
could have kept to herself, why are people questioning her posing for
Playboy. Airbrushed or not, I think it is great that she is proud of her
body. We all know she worked and is still working hard to have the body she
has now.

it amazes me how everybody has something to say about other peoples
business. I (hoppin on my soapbox & throwing in my worthless 2 cents
worth) think having WLS should not define who a person is or guide their
every decision for the rest of their lives. As far as giving people the
wrong idea about her WLS success, well people are going to gossip and
speculate regardless of if she appears in playboy or not. People are going
to hold the woman under a microscope for every bite she puts in her mouth,
every oz she gains or loses, etc. I am not in the public eye and I know
that the curious watch me. Another person I work with had surgery aprox 1
1/2 yers ago, people compare what and how much we eat. Carnie is far more
in the public eye. By the way , I believe just about every photo that
appears in playboy is airbrushed so carnie would be no different in that
respect than all the other bunnies. Good luck to her and The best she can
hope for is that those who make it their business to pass judgement on her
PERSONAL decisions and / or morality will keep it to their selves.

go for it Carnie! if she feels ok doing it, what should anyone else care? I
can't believe it would give WLS pts a wrong Idea. I think people should
give others more credit. if they look and feel good about themselves and
want to do it. do it. if not, don't. As far as the morial issue, everyone
has there own thoughts on what is morial and what isn't. It's a tough one,
cause no matter what people do in life someone is always going to agree and
disagree. if you want to do something and feel ok with it, do it. as long
as your not hurting someone else. she has come a long way. she was to me
one of the first well know people that took the jump and did the WLS. and
Im glad she did cause I had thought about it for yrs. and almost did the
old bypass yrs ago. glad I waited. I am really happy with the RNY. She just
made me realize it was around, new and improved. shoot I'd be happy to just
fit into a one piece swim suit.

I think the fact that she POSED in Playboy is sad. Who is she trying to
convince that she looks good? Of course, this is my own personal opinion.
If I were thin and perfect-bodied I STILL wouldn't pose naked. Part of
Carnie's problem, if you read her book, was her innate desire to please
everyone but herself. Now, if she said, I posed to please MYSELF, I'd say
"Good for you!" However, she seemed to me to be a troubled
person who had greater issues than just overeating, and I'm not sure she's
conquered those. That said, I think she looks GREAT. She's really an
inspiration. And talented, to boot! For me, this surgery is not about
being a Playboy bunny. It's about regaining my health and prolonging my
life. I just think the whole Playboy thing is a sad commentary on the way
we look at women. I'm no feminist, by any stretch of the imagination, but
I do want my daughters to believe that what is inside counts more than
what's on the outside. In my opinion, smart WAY outweighs beautiful. Just
my 2 cents:)

I had to add, good for anybody who has the self esteem to put themselves
out there, Heck, Kathy Bates is my biggest hero after appearing nude in
"About Schmidt" and letting her fat show in full body nudity. I
think women of all sizes and shapes should hold their head high and be
proud of them selves!

I don't have a problem with her posing as far as morality or ethics. My
only concern is that she is going to be airbrushed and "doctored"
up so much that I'm afraid it will give people an unrealistic view. I
don't know about the rest of you but without clothes on - well I'll just
say it's a tad messy. We were talking about this at our support group
meeting and the leader echoed my same feelings. I don't want people to look
at the magazine and see her, in her altogether, without sags, scars or
stretchmarks (God love the guy who has to airbrush all of that out) and
think that they will look the same way after surgery. Believe me, after
losing almost 100 pounds I'm not a pretty sight at all. I'm even ashamed
for my surgeon to see what little bit of my abdomen that he sees. It's just
not attractive at all. Now put on some supportive underwear (NOT A GIRDLE)
and some well fitting clothing and I look halfway OK - not a raving beauty
but a whole lot better than I did at 321 pounds. Anyway, part of me says
more power to her - the other part of me says I don't know - I wouldn't
have done it at all but I'd rather her make them promise not to airbrush
anything out - I'd want everyone to see it as it is. Oh well, just my
opinion.

I say good for her!!!! It takes a person who is secure with their body to
put it on display for all the world to see. I think that in itself says
something about her. She appears to be at a point in her life where she's
at ease and comfortable with her body. So what if she's had PS or is
airbrushed. I intend to pursue PS and I would imagine so do alot of other
WLS patients. I, for one, cannot wait for our Playboy issue to arrive.
The person who posted previously and said that she's judged for everything
she does and every oz. she gains is so right. Way to show em you don't
give a da** Carnie!!!

I look at Carnie's appearance in Playboy as a celebration of her weight
loss no matter what she did to achieve her goal, she made it. And I
frankly think that it is unfair to determine how much AIR was used to make
her look good. They have the AIR for all of the models not just Carnie. I
plan to buy Playboy to celebrate with her and I plan to rent a billboard to
celebrate my own weight loss.

I say, if she has it flaunt it. I am not a Playboy reader but I do want to
see this edition. Does anyone know what month it is expected to come out?
— Charlene W.

I saw her doing an interview on TV and they showed video of the stylists
prepping her for the photos. Not only did they use filters etc. during the
photo shoot, they took a spray can and sprayed her with flesh tone makeup
that evened out her skin tone and hid her scars.

I say, if you have that great of success with this and playboy wants you
,,, GO FOR IT,, LET THAT BE ME...LOL ( my husband would KILL me) but I
betcha he'll buy that month.. actually he won't have too, i will have like
thousands of them posted all over my walls..for EVERYONE to see..LOL wooo
that's a scary thought,, but for real, i think it's great !! and wish her
luck.!

Maybe Al Roker will pose for Playgirl! LOL... Seriously though, Carnie's
"touch-ups" can't be any more "fake" than most of those
woman's boob/lips/nose/tummy jobs. I personally do not think pornography is
immoral or spawned from satanic sexual deviants so: YOU GO GIIIIRRRL!!!

I have already seen the pics of Carnie that were in Playboy...someone
shared them with me via email. I will say that she looks good, although in
all her pics she has her entire stomach covered up with a corset. Cant
tell if she's had any boob work, but would have to say no if asked. If she
did..the PS did a wonderful job lol no visible scar lines. But then
again...they do airbrush the pics at Playboy dont they. I would assume
since the pics are out on the net already that the issue should be in the
stores.

Oops...sent my response without giving my opinion...now how'd I pass that
up lol I think for Carnie to pose nude in Playboy...there is not just one
cut an dried answer that will fit. Yes the public all wants to see what
she looks like now as a former fattie, but she may have done it for self
image reasons too. I myself am a nudist even at 500 pounds so I know that
nudity in itself isnt a matter of ones morality/immorality. To me it is
one of accepting who you are no matter what the outside shell looks like,
flaws and all...because everyone has them. It is about celebrating the
human body and every variation of size, shape, and color under the heavens.
If Carnie can accept herself in her new body by wanting to share pictures
of it with the world...then more power to her. I personally would have
been more interested in seeing her with less clothes so to get a better
look at her stomach scars, totaly body view, etc. If some of you think I'm
a perv wanting to see her nude then so be it...but life is definately more
fun my way! lol ;)

I just finished reading her second book, and I want to say she is a great
spokesperson for WLS... she is funny, honest and irreverent. Yes, Playboy
is a men's magazine... and if one obese guy starts to think about WLS after
seeing her pictures, and saves his life, it eill be worth it. And, from
reading her book, I think this is one reason she decided to do the
pictorial.

I say "you go girl"! Carnie is a role model for us, which is an
incredible burdensome task. Celebrity is tough enough but to be scrutinized
the way she has been, before, during and after her surgery. I love her
honesty and candor in interviews. I saw the "preview pic" in last
month's Playboy...those breasts can't be real but they look spectacular to
me (my husband swears I'm a closet lesbian. No, I'm not...just like a man,
appreciate a beautiful woman. And a beautiful man for that matter). I DO
hope Al Roker has some plastics as well...he said he's been asked about the
chin (or as we call it, turkey wattle). I think there's some PS in his
future. More power to them all, those who can afford it and don't have to
battle with the friggin insurance companies!

Yeah Why Not! For so many years people have suffered the various degrees
physical, mental and emotional pain of living with morbid obsesity. Then
finally going through the
surgery and life style changes. This is a new opportunity for Carnie.
Maybe this is something she may always wanted to do. I'm pre-op, I'm a
390lbs. I don't want pose for Playboy. I walk down a road on a snowy night
and make
snow angels. That is what I am looking forward to. Sorry about that Hef!

Hey Anne..that would be a cute pictoral if you did make all those snow
angels in the nude =) lol

I have my own thoughts regarding the three questions/statements brought up
in your support group. First, Carnie Wilson posing in playboy could not
POSSIBLY give false expectations of this surgery unless the thoughts were
already there to begin with. If anyone has listened to their doctors and
done their research they will have the TRUTH and reality of what this
surgery can and can not do. Never have I read anywhere that it will make me
a playboy bunny. If so, I would pay cash instead of waiting for approval
from my insurance. Second, the other person said it's a cool thing that she
was successful in her weight loss journey. Yes, it's ASSUME that she has
lost an incredible amount of weight.. but to me a JOURNEY is longer then 2
years.. its a life time of learning, adapting and doing what works for
them. Third, I wonder where the member of your group got the news that
Playboy only wanted her because people would think she looks freaky. I
can't EVER remember PLAYBOY wanting FREAKS to pose in their magazine. They
have a legacy of housing and photographing extraordinarily beautiful
people.Hmmmmm maybe that's the real reason they want her. Has anyone seen
her lately? She is beautiful. Now IF they had wanted her to pose PRIOR to
surgery then I would see that persons point. Personally, I think we are all
beautiful people and for some of us surgery only ENHANCES what is already
there. With this surgery comes weight loss, with that comes improved health
if we follow the guidlines set before us, with improved health we feel
better.. When we look good and feel good we are more confident! That is MY
two cents
