Question:
When will I be able to drink more than an ounce?
Pre-op I was a big drinker...at least 2/3 of a gallon of water a day. Now Im incredibly thirsty and until the pouch heals Im limited to 1-2 oz of water at a time. And none of the fail-safes help, I've tried popsickles, icechips, snowcones etc..not even fruit juices (unsweetened of course) help. I just want to guzzle a huge, cold bottle of water. When will I be able to do this again? — donna O. (posted on May 2, 2003)

Hello. I am 10 days post op today. Somethings, just take time &
patience!!!! If, you tried to guzzle water, right now, you would have
terrible pain. Just take small sips, often. I have, also, found that
brushing my teeth more often does help. Hope this helps. Hugs, Karen

When I was a new post-op I could drink about 50 ounces a day - one tiny sip
at a time. I sipped constantly. I drank about 40 ouces of V8 every day (I
was on full liquids for the week after I left the hospital). I took a sip
about every 30 seconds, it seemed. But I stayed nicely hydrated. However,
the dry mouth was a problem for several weeks - I think it is a
post-anesthesia problem.

Donna, I remember that feeling well! I was the same way- could drink a
bathtub of water everyday- so needless to say it was hard to adjust soon
after surgery! lol It will take time, surely but slowly you will be able
to drink more and more. After a few more weeks or months, you could drink
quite a few ounces at a time, and by 6 months I could drink normally again.
I can never "gulp" as I once used to, but pretty close! Goodluck
to you!
