Question:
Does anyone else suffer from a sore tail bone since WLS?

I had WLS in Aug.of 2001,and for the past year my tail bone has been sore, and very painful when I have been setting for awhile, and then get up,it hurts.I am seeing a chiropractor 3 times a week now in the past month. I've lost 140lbs,so there's not as much padding, but I don't understand what makes my tailbone so sore. any suggestion? HELP    — Barbara D. (posted on April 21, 2003)

I have heard so many ppl talk about this so you are not alone. I am only 3 mos out so I have not had the tailbone pain....oddly enough though, I have pain where I can now feel the bones on either side of my butt cheeks. They really hurt sometimes. What does your chiropractor say about the pain?

I am 29 months post and have had THAT problem for over a year. I asked my PCP what I could do she said "excercise" you can excercise your butt muscles so they will be more firm and leave pressure off the bone. Cant say I have tried it.. LOL.. BUT seriously if you think about it...I belive our is 'sore' because for so many YEARS we have been FAT the tail bone has not be exposed - so its NOT hard/callious like someone who grew up thin. I belive it should eventually cure itself as you stay thin and your bone hardens/callious up from 'use'.. I did buy this 'thing' at the fair; a body/chair wrap that makes your posture 'correct' and IT did help while sitting .

Ouch its common, and a good reminder to not sit too long. Many welcome the feeling since it means your usually at or near goal.

Yes! We had surgery around the same time (8/28/01). I've lost 166lbs and I think that we just don't have the cushion to protect it anymore. Funny you should ask this now...I have severe pain when I sit for even an hour. I had to travel to Atlanta for business two weeks ago, and after sitting in the airport, and on the plane, and in the car, and in the conference room ALL DAY, and then back to the car, airport and plane again all in one day, my tail bone and back was absolutely killing me...so I found this "TUSH CUSH" in the SkyMall catalog and I ordered it. I got it a couple of days ago, and it's the best $40 I've spent in a long time. It's made a big difference. I carry it with me to work and use it in the car. It's shaped like a wedge to tilt your pelvis to align your back, and has a cut-out in the tail bone area so that it relieves the pressure....I do feel your pain...lol

I was talking endlessly about this issue (whining is more like it) with my Husband last night and told him I really need to post on the issue so Thank You you beat me to it. :-) It is incredibly painful. I can barely get up from sitting by the end of my work day(sit down job OUCH) I have to ease out of my chair. It has gotten progressively worse in the last month or so. I sure hope it goes away soon. I have been looking for the wedge chair with the cut out spot and am glad to hear that they work because they aren't cheap but if they work they are more than worth the cost. Good luck to you and hopefully someone will post the magic cure. HAS THE CHIROPRACTOR HELPED AT ALL? That is the the next thing I was going to try. I've never been to one so I was unsure if that was a possibility. GOOD LUCK. and congrat's on the great loss. PENNY LAP RNY 07/31/02 -90lbs (25ish from goal)

I had surgery on 8/6/02, I have lost 133lbs. I have the same problem--it really hurts. I am glad that this is kinda normal-since it seems you had alot of response to your question, I guess I will grin and bare it. Thanks so much.

You have to remember you had all that extra "cushion" back there and now you don't have it. I'm 2 years out in June and I still have that problem, so I try to get up and move around alot. Isn't that a wonderful problem!

I am so glad you posted this question. While, I am only 12 weeks out I already have this problem. I thought it was just me! I actually feel stuck sometimes and try to move around to alleviate it. Church pews are brutal! LOL

Here's where I got my TUSH CUSH - www.skymall.com. You can order online, type in Tush Cush in the search box. Also, if you are a member of a frequent flyer program (Delta, Northwest, etc) you can earn miles (3 miles for every dollar spent) toward free tickets...It's like $40-$45 dollars - not cheap, but it's sooo worth it. My back is already feeling better, and in two weeks when I have my breast reduction and I'll be immobile for a few days, it's going to be a Godsend... :o)
