Question:
Does anyone have night sweats?

Ever since I returned home from surgery (lap RNY 3/24/03) I have nightly sweats. It isn't a side effect of my meds (amoxicillan, Vicodin). I wake up drenched in sweat during the night. Has anyone else had this problem? I don't have a fever. Thanks!    — tibberkat (posted on April 2, 2003)

Hi, I am having terrible nights sweats right now too. I had my Lap Rny 3/27/03. I have to get up and change a few times a night. I see my Doctor for first followup appt next Monday and thought I would ask. I am thinking it might be our bodies getting rid of excess fluids from surgery or ? I seem to be healing fine and feel pretty good. I am not really sure whats causing it. If I find anything out, I will definately post it, Cheryl Arnold

Definitely ask your surgeon about it when you go in for a checkup, but I think it is hormonal. When I had a complete hysterectomy I remember getting night sweats really bad, its very common when going through menopause. The symptoms you are having now sounds like when you're going through menopause and thats definitely hormonal. Get it checked out if it continues and keep an eye on your body temp until ya get it checked. Take care.

I had terrible night sweats as well after my Sept 18, 2002 surgery, I was told it was because I was sweating the anthesia out.

Yes, I too experienced a night sweat, my surgey was Monday 3/31. When I woke up Tuesday morning, I could not figure outwhat was going on. Was I hosed down during my nap? Did someone throw water on me. I think its from the anesthesia, but I can't be sure. You may want to consult your surgeon if the problem persists.

How can you be sure it's not your pain meds causing it. Drugs as strong as Vicodin can definitely cause this. The only way to know for sure is to get off of it and take extra strength tylenol instead. I've had no sweating but that's just me. Then again I did tons of head sweating for years before I was diagnosed with sleep apnea, which it turns out is a known side affect. Too bad I didn't know it before I kept walking up with a wet pillow and head. I also went some total body night sweats when I was about 35 or 36. There was no explanation so I assume it was just hormonal. I haven't had then in years. Sorry I can't provide more definitive info.
