Question:
I was diagnosed with a spastic colon (IBS) as a teenager
and I would like to know how gastric bypass surgery would affect this. I am currently waiting for insurance approval. — Lisa S. (posted on February 25, 2003)

I can't say totally for sure but I seemed to have a flare-up of my
irritable bowel the 2nd week after surgery. I started in with diarrhia and
had it for 3 days. However, the 3rd day the diarrhia was improving yet
every time I drank anything my small intestine and colon would
automatically react and I'm be in the bathroom. It was like it was
reacting for no good reason. I still had my g-tube so the surgeon had me
putting the majority of my water in that way so I would not get dehydrated
and also to allow things to settle down - which they did.
<p>Hopefully you would not experience anything worse than me. If the
condition has been under good control then even if you have a flare-up most
likely it will settle back down. There is no guaranteed answer to this one
because this surgery does upset the intestinal tract and it does take a
while for it to behave again. Good Luck! Chris
