Question:
Can I get a psych eval before I have spoken with the dr?
If I got a psych eval before talking to the dr, before insurance approval, etc., would that speed things up? Like, if I went to see them, with that in hand, would that help? — Erin Z. (posted on January 13, 2003)

I would just check with your surgeon's office and see if there is a certain
psychiatrist they require. Often, as with my doc, your doctor will require
a psych eval even if insurance does not, so they may be particular. Also, I
would reccommend seeing about future visits both pre- and post- op to deal
with emotional and psychological issues. FIX YOUR BODY AND YOUR HEAD!!! :)

My husband and I have both seen the psychologist - and our surgeon
appointment isn't until 1-24-03. Our insurance (BCBS of Minn) has
committed to reimbursing us for the visits. My theory is to get as many
ducks in a row before seeing the surgeon. Best wishes.

I reccommend asking the Surgeon's offfice for a list of Psychologist they
recommend - sometimes they have a list. I didn't do that - just had a
referral from my PCP and the one I went to wanted me to have further
sessions to help me find out why I ate and to deal with family issues - all
fine and good IF you can afford it. I could not. After I was stopped from
going on - The surgeon's office recommended a Psycholgist - who totally
shot down the 1st Eval. I was given tests and a session aimed at the
surgery and post-op of a WLS patient. It was a $180 lesson to go where the
hospital/surgeon reccommends and I know this can be done pre-consult. Good
Luck. - Sally

My surgeon won't have a consult without first having a phych eval. Guess
he don't want to put the horse before the cart.. Makes sense. Cigna POS
paid for my eval totally btw. Make sure to jump through the hoops right
and maybe your insurance will pay for yours as well. Pre-Op May 03 Lord

I called to schedule something, and I can't even get in until March 26, so
I took the appt. That seems so far off. Should I try for something sooner?
