Question:
New job, 11p-7a (2 days week) any suggestions on eating?

Hi, I am currently pre-op but will soon be on the other side (end of December). I wanted to know if anyone had suggestions on nutrition while working midnight shifts? Do I eat like I would if it were through the day? or do I just drink my liquids? I will only be working a couple of days a week since I am a student, but this is a real concern of mine. I want to lose as much weight as I can during my window of opportunity. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. God Bless!    — Jennifer O. (posted on December 2, 2002)

Hi, I am a nurse that worked the night shift for a very long period of time. That is when I gained much of my weight. You have to eat, and you have to drink. But just make sure that you get in all of your rest and the food tha you choose are good choices. I lived off of coke and ho-ho's...not a good thing!! Good Luck on your new job!!

From experience I would suggest that you do eat while you are working, however avoid eating a couple of hours before you go home and after you get home, because then you are going to go to bed. Treat it just as if you are working days and sleeping nights, instead of the other way around. Personally I find that Kraft cheddar and colby cheese, with a slice of lunch meat are excellent meals without being too heavy. Also, if you can move around as much as possible, your body wants to shut everything down during the night so being still on midnights is much worse!! I hate that shift :( good luck and take care

I just got a job working 11p-7a. I haven't started yet but I plan to eat like I would if I worked during the day. I will eat once on my break at work. Then go home and sleep. Get up and eat two times before I go to work. Best wishes with your surgery!! =)
