Question:
I recently read an article that indicated there was a connection between WLS and

Lupus. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? Has anyone heard of those a few years post-op being diagnosed with Lupus?    — Carletta B. (posted on October 30, 2002)

They (whoever they are) try to blame everything on weight loss. You would have to know whether a person was developing lupus prior to surgery to truthful know if the surgery caused it. There is no logical reason or proof for the surgery, followed by proper eating and supplementation should cause any disease. But there will always be someone trying to scare us.

Faye your right. Folks who never even heard of WLS get all sorts of dreaded diseases everyday. But when a post op gets one someone automatically ties the two together. Now both cases are sad when anyone gets ill. But scaring folks saying X disease is WLS related is terrible. The person is more likely to live longer and healthier after surgery and dropping a 100 pounds.

It also helps to remember that there is a HUGE difference between "causation" and "correlations". While you can correlate anything to anything, it does not mean it is caused by it. Science is constantly finding correlations to things that later fail to pan out as a cause. One must look at how strong the correlations are. For example, there is no scientific proof that tobacco causes cancer, however the correlation between smoking and cancer is extremely strong...hence on can assume (safely so) that smoking likely causes cancer. Gee did I rattle on or what?

The old out-dated intestonal bypass operation for wl sometimes produced what is now known as a blind loop infection, causing a rare form of arthritis. This happened to me several years ago and I was diagnosed with MS, Lupus and everything in between until they found blind loop infection. It does present with Lupus sympthoms. However, i am not aware that the newer surgeries do anything like this.

I recall reading that bacteria in the intestine (if I recall correctly, it's the bypassed intestine), is what they believe can cause the auto-immune disease Lupus. I found this info somewhere on the internet not too long ago.
