Question:
I am three days post op and only getting in about 30oz of liquid in.
Is that normal or should I force myself to take in more? My surgeon said if I'm not hungry don't eat but I think he meant after the two week liquid phase. I also have tons of gas is this normal after lap rny? — kelly M. (posted on October 11, 2002)

Right after surg. its real hard to do all the things they tell you you need
to do. Relax..push the water but sip sip all day long...water is best but
when you cant do it use crystal lite sf, and sf Fruit 2-o and sf tea
yadda..i use sf tang but would hold off on the orange for a couple more
weeks...anyhow, sf jello and clear broth counts as water too
and protein drinks made w/ water or carnation instant..
well, good luck honey..enjoy the no hunger stage..hand on to it as long as
you can LOL

Try sugar free popsicles and fudgesicles. They really helped me get in
extra fluids.

Crystal Lite makes a decaffinated ice tea that is good. Or try any of the
other products they make...it helps...

I drink Diet Snapple like it's going out of style. I should buy stock...

I just read an article in the gym. If you eat watermelon a 1/16th wedge
equals 1 1/3 cups of water. Watermelon was one of the first solid foods I
ate.

To the previous poster: What kind of Diet Snapple are you drinking? Be
careful of drinking the teas because they do contain caffeine. Caffeine
is a diuretic, which means that you have to take in 2 additional oz of
water for each oz of caffeine-containing beverage you consume.

Don't worry, you're normal. It's really hard to get all your water in at
the start. You get full so fast and since you're on all fluids anyway, you
just don't feel very thirsty. Just keep trying and eventually you'll build
it up. The gas is normal with lap RNY too. I was burping for about a
week, but it goes away!
