Question:
My surgeon says that I can expect to lose 85%...
I know that my surgeon would know best and it all basically comes down to my commitment to the surgery, but is it reasonable to expect to lose 85% of my excess weight? — Morna B. (posted on October 6, 2002)

ABSOLUTELY. With exercise and some luck you might be like me, loosing 100%
and getting to my chart weight. The last 12 pounds or so were helped
immemnsely by my doing demolition work 5 hours a night at a friends fire
damaged home. Shovel debris 5 hours a night is EXCELLENT if dirty exercise.
I looked like a coal miner:( 80% or so is average. If you not a super
morbid you have a better chance to get to chart weight...

Well I've been only able to get to 80%. I'm happy and yet unhappy about it.
Geese, if I can't get to goal (100%) how can I hope to even keep off what
I've lost? Oh well, we are all different. You may be one of the lucky one's
to get to goal. Everyone is different.

All of the books that I have read on WLS say that the loss ranges from
50-85% of excess body weight with 70% being the average (50% is the
"success point"). The surgeons as HUP follow a different
formula with 30% of the initial body weight determining success.

I am 18 months post-op and have lost 82% so far. Of course a few pounds
still drip off each month, and I'm hoping to get to 85% by my 2-year
anniversary, which will mean a weight loss of another 15 lbs.

I had told my doctor my goal was 160-170 but I figured I would never get
that far. My goal size was a 14 or 16. I am now only 4 1/2 months post op
and 8 pounds from my goal. I lost 92 pounds so far and went from a size 24
to a size 8. This is better than my expectations. Check out my profile.

I am less than 8 months post-op and have successfully lost 76% of my excess
weight. I have 16 more pounds to go to hit the 85% mark and I expect to do
that by the end of this year. My personal goal weight is 157 lbs (charts
say I should be 142 lbs, um too skinny ;) ), which would be a loss of a
little over 91% of my excess weight. I was 314 pounds the day of surgery,
at 157lbs I will be exactly half of the woman I started out as. :)

I have lost 70 percent of my excess weight in a little under 8 months and
fully expect to get to 85% someday. I am still losing 5 or so pounds a
month and at that rate, should hit the 85% in 4 months. We can also do
some things to help it along, like EXERCISE, and control the snacking. I
think it is very possible to get to the 85% or more. Some seem to get
there with no effort at all and others have to work at it a little, but
very possible.

At 5 months post-op, I am losing at an 88% rate (at least according to the
Weight Loss Planner). I think it is reasonable that you could lose 85%.
And you are correct when you say it all basically does come down to your
commitment to the surgery. :o)

Anything is possible if you take really good care of yourself. That means
following the rules, getting the exercise going and drinking tons of water.
I never dreamed I'd reach my goal of 147 lbs. That would mean I'd have to
lose 100 lbs. It just wasn't conceivable to me that I could do. I had
Open RNY on May 14, 2001 and I've lost the 100 lbs. plus some. I now weigh
117, down from 252. But I exercise, drink tons of water and have always
followed my surgeons rules to the letter. I still watch what I eat very
carefully and eat 6 tiny meals per day. You can determine your success.
Just work with the tool and not against it. Good Luck!!!
