Actually, the procedure, as it is being done today, has not been around for
10 or 15 years. The surgeries done that long ago were done differently and
resulted in long-term complications that are simply not seen with today's
procedure. I did question a surgeon about this who said that with proper
supplementation of vitamin B, protein, Calcium Citrate, etc. and proper
nutrition the RNY patient today should be nothing but healthier in 10
years. I know several long term patients who are 5 or 6 years out, all of
whom are doing well and remain committed to the surgery. Hope this helps a
bit. Best wishes!

Long term 10 years? Many of us would have died from MO co morbidities by
then. This is true of both me and my wife. WLS saved our lives.

During my research of WLS, I came across data that indicated the average
life span of WLS patients was "15 to 20 years". This gave me a
good scare, since I'm only 28. Just last week, I participated in a
University study of the long-term health of WLS patients and had the
opportunity to chat w/ the Drs conducting the study. They were very
encouraging about long-term post-op of patients, due to the reduction of
co-morbities and increased overall health. Also, I happen to work with
several people who had WLS nearly 15 years ago. They are all in good
health and have remained fairly close to their "goal" weight.

I think the surgery EXTENDS our life an additional 10-15 years.
