Question:
How can you gain so soon post-op?

Hi everyone. I am in a PANIC. I went away for 4 days and just returned home tonight.I got on the scale and was expecting a significant loss due to all the things we did on vacation...and I gained 2 pounds! I admit to not drinking enough water, missing some vitamins and not bringing my protein shake along...but a gain?? I can see not losing..but a gain?? I must have walked up and down the boardwalk and all over God's green earth a million times until my feet were crying....so how can I have gained? I munched on some BAD foods, but just a bite here and there (anything more would make me throw up). I'm so bummed. Could this mean my staples have disrupted and I'm going to gain it all back?? Please help...I'm not a happy camper. (p.s...any remedies for a nasty cold sore my lip picked up while away, too?) lol...I'm a mess! Thanks, guys.    — Kelly C. (posted on August 24, 2002)

Are you due to get your period within the next few days? That can help retain water etc...don't panic.....you'll be fine.

Are you retaining fluids? going to start your monthly? About the cold sore on your lip. I swear by tea tree oil. Just apply to area several times a day. Will dry it right up. Can purchase in health food or (maybe) food store. Hope this helps.

I am 8 months post-op and I always go up 2-3 lbs and down 2-3 lbs, I do this for a week or so then BAM I lose 4 lbs! I just recently weighed in at 189lbs...well a few days later, 188lbs....Yeah!..then a day later back to 192...then 194..then 190, then 189..holding at 189..then BAM 184!!! See, it is crazy what your body does at times..That is why using a scale often is not a good idea, although I still do it, but I do not get upset with gains because I know they will even out. I am down 94 lbs now...You will be fine!

Don't panic! Even when you eat "good" foods from a restaurant, you don't realize how much salt they use for flavor. If you weren't preparing your own foods, you just don't know what's in them. By making good choices, you did avoid that fat, sugar, calories, etc, but you still don't know about the salt. You said you weren't drinking all of your water while you were away and that's what flushes out the salt and water retention. My guess is that you are retaining water and it will come of simply by going back to your routine. The extra walking may even make several pounds drop off at once after you're back on the wagon. Please don't panic, instead realize that you strayed a little bit, it could have been a lot worse, and you enjoyed your vacation!

Abreve is GREAT for cold sores. It is expensive but worth every penny.

Lysine supplements for cold sores are helpful, as is calling your Dr. for an RX for an antiviral ointment such as acyclovir.

I'm the same way as Patricia below. My weight goes up and down 2-3 pounds in a day and then drops the 3 pounds over the next couple of days. You mentioned that you walked all over the place on your vacation. Remember that muscle weighs more than fat. Perhaps you built up your muscles doing all that walking?

Kelly, I checked your profile and noticed that you just had surgery a few months ago. You are experiencing somethingthat will occur along with the plateaus while on your weight loss journey. I have looked at the scale in dismay too when I have noticed a 2 or 3 pound weight gain. It usually goes away in a day or two with more...as for the cold sore, definitely Aleve!!

If you were travelling you are likely retaining fluid. Also, the food in restaurants usually has a good amount of sodium. Don't panic. wait a couple of days and check your weight again. I am sure that you will lose those pounds! As far as the fever blister, call your doctor or dentist and get an rx for denavir. It works faster than anything else I have tried and I have tried everything!

I wouldnt be so upset (although I know gaining is upseting). That happens to me all the time. SOmetimes, I am just retaining water. It usually goes away in a few days. Plus, when I work out or do a lot of activity, I seem to gain sometimes....I chalk it up to muscle. Dont worry, I'm sure those pounds will melt away very soon!
