Question:
In the past, has anyone gained weight while in hospital
I'm a worry wart! Years ago when I had a hysterectomy, I excitedly struggled with my walking ( still remember the pain)to get the the scale. I actually gained 6 pounds in the hospital. 5 days, on IV, and they took stuff out of me, AND I gained weight! Do you think that's a bad sign???? Sandi — goodgal (posted on August 10, 2002)

Gaining weight in the hospital isn't abnormal. It is fluid retention and
isn't a "fat" weight gain. You won't gain "fat" weight
after wls in the hospital...promise! The fluid retention can be helped(if
its a problem) by medication. Talk to your doctor. I had Lasix in the
hospital because I had a headache caused by fluid retention. Good Luck!

It's normal - my understanding is that they pump a lot of saline into you
during surgery, so you have a little more "water weight" when
it's over.

I went into the hospital on Wednesday morning weighing in at 140 for my tt
and liposuctin. I stepped on the scale this morning and had gained 5
pounds!! I know it's water weight since I haven't ate that much in the
past 3 days but it's depressing!!! I don't plan on getting on the scale
now for a couple of weeks!!

I gained EIGHT (water) lbs . My fingers & toes were too big to bend!
The nice thing was they took 11 buddies with them when they left a few days
later!

Hi, when I had my WLS last November I gained at least 15 pounds of fluid.
It was very disheartening but I was assured by everyone that it was normal
and would disappear soon. My sister is a nurse and said that almost
everyone who undergoes anything traumatic like surgery or a bad accident
develops this and the nurses and other medical personnel watch for what
they refer to as 'The fluid shift' when your body sheds that extra fluid
and returns to normal. Good luck on your journey.

When I had my open RNY, I was given a fluid iv, which they changed the bag
on twice before I went into the operating room. After surgery I was
weighed and I had put on 9 pounds in liquid weight. Fortunately, 10 days
after surgery I had lost 18 pounds. So no worries, it's only temporary.

Count me in. I gained 5 pounds at the hospital, it hung on for two weeks
(I had to go back in and get more IVs), then it came off. Is that annoying
or what? You expect to get on the scale and see a 5-pound loss, and see a
five pound gain. So you are TEN pounds heavier than you thought you would
be. Man, I hate when that happens.

I am with you~ I gained three pounds as of the day I was discharged. I
was so bummed but when I went to get the staples out 19 days after the day
of surgery, I had lost 19 lbs. Good Luck and you will be in my prayers~

Oh my goodness, yes! And, oh, I wish someone had warned me...I came home
12 pounds heavier and very upset. My nurse sister told me that it was just
fluids from the IVs and that I should lose it fast. I could see it in my
swollen wrists and face. She was right-2 weeks later I had lost that 12
and 12 more!!
